Lime Kiln summer season

Theater at Lime Kiln in Lexington has announced its summer season of outdoor music and plays. The season will open May 29 with a concert by Rockbridge County's Mighty Rainmakers.

Other concerts, ranging from bluegrass to zydeco, in this year's Coors Concert Series will be on Sundays through Sept. 4. The Metro Blues Allstars end the concert series with the traditional end-of-summer bash.

Lime Kiln's theater season will begin on June 15 with the 10th season presentation of ``Stonewall Country.'' The play will run through July 16. On July 20, Shakespeare's ``Romeo and Juliet'' will open with original music and continue through Aug. 13. The Family Folktale Festival of three one-act plays will follow from Aug. 16 through Sept. 3. Plays in the festival are ``Jack and the Big Tree,'' ``Munci Meg,'' and ``3 Drops of Blood.''

Tickets for Lime Kiln events range from $6-$20 and are available beginning on April 18 from the box office or by calling 463-3074.

Environmental leadership

Hollins College will host the Women's Environmental Leadership Conference on April 15-16. The conference will include lectures, workshops and an environmental art exhibit and will showcase women's contributions to the environment.

Speakers include Julie Lewis, creator of Deja Shoes; Susan Weber, executive director of Zero Population Growth in Washington; Priscilla Sears of Dartmouth College; and representatives from Co-op America, The Nature Conservancy, Jefferson National Forest and Virginia Tech's Department of Wood Science and Forest Products.

Registration for the conference is $100 ($25 for students), and it includes a reception and ethnic-foods dinner. For more information, call 362-6427 or 362-6711.

Veteran reporter speaks April 18

Veteran White House reporter Helen Thomas will discuss ``My Career in Journalism'' on April 18 at 8 p.m. in Hollins College's Hollins Theatre.

Thomas served as president of the Women's National Press Club, was the first woman officer of the National Press Club, and was the first woman officer of the White House Correspondent Association.

Her lecture is free.

African American Youth Conference

The Alliance for Excellence is sponsoring the first Roanoke Valley African American Youth Conference on April 23 at Virginia Western Community College. The program will begin with registration at 8 a.m. and wrap up around 2:30 p.m.

The conference will operate under the theme Excellence Without Excuses, and the keynote speaker will be attorney Patricia Russell-McCloud of Atlanta. Workshops and lunch are included in the conference.
