ROANOKE TEEN-AGER SHOT IN LEG; NO ARREST MADE

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the thigh Wednesday night as he walked in the rear of the Brittany Apartments in Northwest Roanoke. The youth was treated at a hospital, according to police.

Shawn Maurice Leftwich, of Pleasant View Avenue Northwest, was shot about 11:10 p.m. as he walked with two friends along the 200 block of Westside Boulevard, according to Roanoke police.

Someone from one of the apartments had called out, "Is that Pookie?" referring to one of Leftwich's companions, according to a search warrant filed in Roanoke County Circuit Court on Thursday.

Leftwich's friend replied, asking what the individual wanted. Then shots were fired; one hit Leftwich.

The victim showed police the apartment from which the gunshots came. Police found a 22-caliber revolver in the apartment.

Three teen-age boys were questioned but no one was arrested. City youth bureau detectives will continue to investigate. - DIANE STRUZZI
