LORD BOTETOURT SLIPS PAST FLEMING

Gabe Sander hit a double and a two-run homer to lead Lord Botetourt past William Fleming 9-8 in a high school baseball game Thursday night in Daleville.

William Fleming (1-3) led 6-3 in the fourth inning, but the Cavaliers scored four runs in that inning and two in the fifth.

The Colonels cut their deficit to one in the top of the seventh when Al Holland Jr. hit a two-run homer, but Lord Botetourt (3-1) held on for the victory.

Bryant Wiggins went 4-for-5 with four singles for William Fleming.

In other high school baseball:

In Lynchburg, Scott Hayes pitched a one-hitter and struck out 10 as North Cross (1-1) beat Timberlake Christian 5-1. Hayes also was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Chris Carr pitched a complete game and hit a two-run homer as William Byrd defeated visiting Glenvar 9-6. Teammate Mike McGuire also slammed a two-run homer for the Terriers (5-0). Rob Robinson went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer to lead the Highlanders.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: In Buchanan, Jamie Bednarek scored three goals and his sister, Alysia, added one as Lord Botetourt routed James River 7-1 in non-district boys' soccer.

Kris Keeton added two goals for the Cavaliers (3-0). James River is 0-4.

Michael Berry set up both goals as visiting William Byrd opened its season with a 2-0 victory over Cave Spring in non-district action.

Matt Burton and Joe Cockfield scored the goals for the Terriers. Cave Spring is 0-2.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Alysha Whitenack and Emily Bryant scored first-half goals as Patrick Henry blanked North Cross 2-0 at the Raiders' field. Emily Manetta made 17 saves to keep North Cross in the game.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Tommy Lesperance and Glenn Hambrick won the No. 3 doubles match to give Glenvar a 5-4 victory over Bath County, the Highlanders' 18th consecutive dual-meet victory.
