18-YEAR-OLD CHARGED IN CAR CHASE

An 18-year-old Roanoke man has been charged in a March 29 downtown car chase with police in which four vehicles were hit. No one was injured.

Police arrested Vandora Alexander Gaither on Wednesday as he appeared in General District Court on an unrelated incident.

Gaither, of the 900 block of Rockland Avenue Northwest, was charged with speeding, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, failure to stop for police, and hit and run of attended and unattended property. He remained in Roanoke City Jail on Thursday. Bail was set at $6,500.

Police did not know why Gaither's license had been suspended. If convicted, Gaither could receive jail time for the misdemeanor charges, according to the commonwealth's attorney's office.

Just before lunch last week, police attempted to stop a man who was speeding on the 1800 block of 10th Street Northwest. The man accelerated, leading police at high speed into downtown. At Franklin Road and Jefferson Street, a man whom witnesses have identified as Gaither hit four vehicles, spraying debris across the intersection.

The driver fled on foot.
