Roanoke Airport Manager Jacqueline Shuck said the airport had been trying for a long time to convince the commuter airline serving American Airlines to increase the number of flights it operates out of Roanoke.
The new flight is aimed at business travelers trying to catch the first flights of the day from American Airlines' hub at Raleigh-Durham, said Beth Gephart, American Eagle's marketing director. American Eagle will be able to offer passengers more choices than before, including nonstop flights to London, she said.
Shuck said the flight will enable passengers to fly from Roanoke on American and arrive at a West Coast destination by noon.
The new flight will depart Roanoke at 5:40 a.m. and arrive in Raleigh-Durham at 6:27 a.m. A new return flight will leave Raleigh-Durham at 6:55 a.m. and arrive in Roanoke at 7:47 a.m.
That flight and another each day will use a 19-seat Jetstream Super 31 aircraft. The other two will use 36-seat Shorts 360 aircraft. Both are powered by twin turbo-prop engines. The larger aircraft have a flight attendant on board.
American Airlines and American Eagle operate nearly 200 departures daily from the Raleigh-Durham hub.
