CHICKENPOX DEATHS LINKED TO INFECTION

Five Southern California children with chickenpox apparently died from a severe bacterial infection that entered their bloodstreams through their sores, a health official said Friday.

"We're actually dealing with two diseases," said Dr. Shirley Fanin, public health officer for Los Angeles County. The fatalities are being caused by Group A streptococcus, a bacterial disease, she said.

heavy chickenpox season is giving the bacteria more opportunity, she added.
