ROUGHNESS CHARGES JUSTIFIED

I thought I had become accustomed to Jack Bogaczyk's lack of journalistic talents or abilities related to sports reporting; however, he hit a new low with his "The Dean of All Coaches a Sore Loser" article of March 21. Bogaczyk's style seems to be that of personality assassination only. Several times I noticed similar articles regarding Virginia Tech's 1992 football season - criticism of the coach, the assistant coaches and their abilities or lack thereof.

I don't know Bogaczyk's educational background, but I'd bet my last Pete Rose baseball card he's a University of Virginia grad. I would also guarantee he's a card-carrying member of the ABC (Anybody but Carolina) fan club. He contends that because Smith complained of the quality of the officiating he was "whining" and a "sore loser." It seems in the past when Jeff Jones of UVa "complains," he has legitimate beefs. When do complaints become whines or vice-versa?

The Boston College game article in your own section by "Landmark News Service" concurred with Smith's observations about the game's roughness and the unnecessary fouls by Boston College; so did ESPN commentators during a review of the game Sunday night.

I guess it's hard to write about a team that's been so successful for so long while also producing a high percentage of graduates with never a hint or suggestion of impropriety within the program, especially if your glasses seem to be tinted with orange and blue.
