WESTERN VIRGINIANS WIN PRESS WOMEN AWARDS

The VPW awarded 265 prizes at its spring conference. The state group has entered the 111 first-place awards in the National Federation of Press Women's communications contest.

Patricia Mantey, creative director at Haynes Home Furnishings in Virginia Beach, and Sylvia Weinstein, public relations consultant at Waters Advertising Agency in Newport News, tied for second place in the sweepstakes competition. Norma Lugar, vice president for marketing and public relations at Education Systems Corporation in Roanoke, took third place.

Sweepstakes winners are determined by a point system based on the number and level of awards and number of entries per category.

Other award winners from Western Virginia included: Su Clauson-Wicker of Blacksburg, an editor at Virginia Tech; Sally L. Harris of Christiansburg, public affairs coordinator at Virginia Tech; Sookhan Ho of Blacksburg, public relations coordinator at Virginia Tech; Mary C. Holliman of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech University Research editor; Christina M. Maccherone of Blacksburg, a free-lance writer and assistant news bureau director at Radford University; Lynn A. Nystrom of Christiansburg, Virginia Tech College of Engineering news director; and Kathryn P. Sevebeck of Blacksburg, education director for Virginia Water Center at Virginia Tech.
