The fuel spread out in a long stream but was contained on the landfill property and did not pose a serious environmental hazard, said Larry Logan, deputy fire chief for Roanoke County.
Alleghany Construction Co., which is installing a liner at the landfill, owned the fuel truck, Logan said. The company had a crew of about 20 men cleaning up the spill when emergency crews arrived, he said.
The spill was on hard shale soil in the area where garbage will eventually be buried at the landfill, Logan said. If it had been near a creek, it could have been disastrous, he said.
