UVA RIPS UNC IN LACROSSE

A crowd of 4,200 watched Saturday as third-ranked Virginia dominated No. 5 North Carolina at Fetzer Field and ended the Tar Heels' 27-game home winning streak in men's lacrosse, 16-6.

After taking a 10-2 halftime lead, only to see Carolina score four unanswered goals in the third quarter, Virginia outscored the Tar Heels 6-0 in the final period to complete the rout.

Freshman attackman Michael Watson had four goals and junior midfielder David Jones had five points - three goals and two assists - as Virginia improved its record to 7-1 and clinched the first seed for the ACC Tournament starting April 22 in Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers, who have held their past four opponents to eight goals or fewer, limited 1993 ACC player of the year Ryan Wade to a single assist. No player had more than one goal for the Tar Heels (5-4).

UVa outshot Carolina 30-10 in the first half, when Cavaliers' goalie James Ireland was required to make only three saves.
