MORE BIG NAMES MISS CUT

Two more drivers joined the list of those who have fallen in second-day Winston Cup qualifying in 1994 as Jimmy Hensley and John Andretti were among five drivers at Bristol International Raceway on Saturday who failed to make today's Food City 500.

"Other people have gone through the same thing this year and it'll be the same thing later on down the road," Hensley said after running 39th fastest.

"We didn't get a good lap in today and we really didn't get a good one in yesterday. It's just part of the game. I'll go home and watch my daughter play basketball this weekend."

Hensley was only about a half-second slower than pole winner Chuck Bown.

Ward Burton led the second round with a speed of 124.082 mph to win the 21st starting spot. Had he run that lap Friday, he would have started ninth.

Wally Dallenbach and Bobby Hamilton pulled themselves out of non-qualifying positions and improved to 33rd and 34th respectively - the last two regular starting spots in the field.

"That's cutting it close," Dallenbach said. "Man, I'm getting an ulcer. But there's going to be a lot of people going through what I've been going through. It's not any fun."

Dallenbach missed back to back races at Richmond and Atlanta.

"If we could find two-tenths of a second, we'd be in the show every week and then we could concentrate on racing," he said. "Now, all we seem to be doing is concentrating on qualifying."

Three drivers - Dale Jarrett, Jeff Burton and Darrell Waltrip - received provisional starting spots. Jarrett and Burton earned the regular provisional spots. Waltrip took the provisional for past Winston Cup champions.

It was the third time Jarrett has used a provisional this season, so he won't be eligible for another one until the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte next month.

Waltrip, meanwhile, switched from Hoosier to Goodyear tires for his Saturday run and will compete on Goodyears in today's race, which starts at 1 p.m.

"Every week we go home and sit down and ask ourselves why we didn't run any better," Waltrip said. "We've been needing to go somewhere and run the Goodyears so we can go home on Monday morning and say the tires were not the problem. We're basically running a test for ourselves."

Waltrip said he plans to run Hoosier tires at North Wilkesboro and Martinsville, where he has tested them.

Hoosier President Bob Newton said he had no problem with Waltrip's one-race defection.

"He's got an option," Newton said. "He's doing what he feels like he needs to do to be competitive here."

Others who missed the cut were Brad Teague, Jeremy Mayfield and Loy Allen.
