The Catamounts, ranked No. 22 in this week's Collegiate Baseball poll, used an 18-hit attack and clutch pitching by starter Jason Beverlin to hold the Keydets scoreless until the sixth inning in the first game. Outfielder Tim Williams led VMI with three hits, including a double.
In the second game, right-hander Kevin Rexrode went the distance for Western Carolina and held VMI to five hits. No Keydet had more than one hit in the game.
Virginia Tech got two strong performances from its starting pitchers and took two games from Howard, 5-0 and 10-2.
Tech starter Rob Gibson (2-0) of Salem pitched seven innings of shutout ball in the first game. The senior left-hander struck out nine without walking a batter.
Bison pitcher Darrell Scott held Tech to five hits. David Fitt had a triple and an RBI, and Kevin Barker had a triple and two RBI.
Vinton native Brian Young pitched five innings, allowing one unearned run and one hit in the second game.
Catcher Josh Herman of Roanoke led the Hokies at the plate with two hits and three RBI.
At Radford, Duane Filchner drove in nine runs to propel the Highlanders to a Big South Conference doubleheader sweep of Towson State.
Filchner smashed a three-run homer in Radford's 13-12 come-from-behind win in the first game and added a grand slam in the 12-6 nightcap.
The Highlanders trailed 8-0 in the first game before rallying in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score. Center fielder Alex Vamonsky, who reached on an error, score the game-winning run on shortstop Kelly Dampeer's two-out double. Dampeer, of Roanoke, went 4-for-4 in the first game.
Travis Toms (4-2) picked up the win in relief, allowing just one hit in 1 innings.
Filchner staked Radford to a 7-5 lead in the second game with his second-inning slam. Jim Abbott (2-3) scattered six hits over seven innings and struck out five to collect the win.
Greensboro scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to edge Ferrum 3-2 in a Dixie Conference game.
Chad Maddox led the Panthers (18-3, 14-3) on offense, going 2-for-3. Keith Mayhew (4-1) took the loss, striking out four and allowing six hits in a complete-game effort.
