MCGIRT WINS OVER BRAMBLE

James "Buddy" McGirt is a former world champion who hopes to be one again, possibly as early as this fall.

Livingston Bramble is an ex-champion whose salad days are far behind him.

McGirt peppered Bramble with hooks, jabs and combinations Saturday night and scored a one-sided, 12-round decision.

McGirt won every round on two of the official cards and 11 rounds on the third.

The 30-year-old McGirt hopes for a fall challenge against Pernell Whitaker, to whom he lost the WBC welterweight championship on March 6, 1993.

Whitaker defended the title Saturday night against Santos Cardona in the feature at the Scope.

It was the seventh straight fight in which McGirt failed to score a knockout but he looked sharp throughout, especially with his left hook. When he lost to Whitaker, his left was almost useless because of what turned out to be a ruptured tendon in his shoulder. He had surgery March 15, 1993.

It was the 62nd victory against three losses and a draw for McGirt, also a former junior welterweight champion. The 33-year-old Bramble, a native of the Virgin Islands who lives in Marshals Creek, Pa., was a lightweight champion from 1984 to 1986.

Bramble is 36-13.
