FERRUM TIED FOR THIRD IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Defending champion Ferrum was tied for third in the team standings, and Roanoke College was in eighth after one round of the 12-team Virginia Intercollegiate Golf Championships in Hot Springs.

Longwood was in first, shooting a 290 on the 5,957 yard, par-71 Homestead course. Ferrum had a 305 and Roanoke had a 324.

Ferrum's R.J. Weaver was tied for eighth with a 75, and Roanoke College's Darrell Craft was tied for 12th with a 77. Longwood's Eric Levin led the field with a 71.

Al McAllister had the low net score in the Men's Spring Challenge golf tournament at Countryside Golf Course Saturday, beating Steve Allen in a playoff on the first hole of the par-71 course. Both shot 65s.

Arman Fletcher had the low gross score, where players do not get a handicap. He beat Steve Blankenship, who finished with a 75.

Forty players competed in the one-day event.
