EPPERLY FINISHES 19TH IN GYMNASTICS COMPETITION

Radford's Christie Epperly finished 19th at the NCAA Southeast Regional women's gymnastics championships Saturday in Morgantown, W.Va.

Epperly, a Cave Spring High School graduate, had an overall score of 36.925. Kentucky sophomore Jenny Hansen, the defending national champion, was the individual winner with a score of 39.75 and will advance to the national championships April 21-23 in Salt Lake City.

Georgia, which placed three gymnasts in the top six, won it's seventh straight team title and will advance to national competition. The Bulldogs are the defending national champions.

Junior Burrough and Harold Deane were named co-recipients of the Bill Gibson Cavalier of the Year Award on Saturday night at the annual Virginia men's basketball banquet at University Hall in Charlottesville.

Burrough, a junior forward, led the Cavaliers in scoring and rebounding, and was a third-team ACC selection.

Deane, a freshman guard, also received Virginia's rookie of the year award.

Cornel Parker and Chris Havlicek were co-recipients of the Michael McCann Leadership Award, and Chris Alexander was named most improved player. Parker was also named best defensive player.

Virginia Tech honored 170 student-athletes who have excelled in academics at the Athletic Director's' Honors Brunch Saturday in Blacksburg.

Special recognition went to Tech's All-Academic team, comprised of the top student-athlete in each varsity sport.

Members of the team are Ray Kaczmarek, baseball; Jimmy Carruth and Christi Osborne, basketball; Eric Parlette and Tara Byler, cross country; Jim Pyne, football; Mark McGuire, golf; Kim Campbell and Jon DeLong, soccer; Dana Fennessy and Collins Trimble, swimming; Scott Cuppett and Michelle Hildebrand, tennis; Kari Manheimer and Steve Kozoil, track; Amanda Yelsh, volleyball; Jun Davis, wrestling; Mandy Anderson, cheerleading; Matt Crowder, managers and trainers; and Suzanne Natili, HighTechs.
