WILLIAMSBURG CALENDAR

Exhibits and Programs at Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center: The oldest institution in this country devoted exclusively to collecting, exhibiting and researching American folk art, the center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For program information, call (804)-220-76-98. A special exhibit, "Blue Ridge Folk Instruments and Their Makers," is on display during April, May and June.

The Gunpowder Incident: April 20-24 A re-enactment of events in April 1775 when gunpowder was taken by British Marines from the public stores in the Magazine. The reaction of Virginians to this removal will be the focus of special events programming. For more information, please call (804) 220-7041.

Prelude to Independence: May 15 Williamsburg celebrates the May 15, 1776, adoption of the Virginia Resolution for Independence at the Capitol. That event opened a 50-day period of legislative activity that led to the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. The Colonial Williamsburg Fife and Drum Corps, the Williamsburg militia and a dramatic narrative will mark this historic event.

Tool Symposium - ``Eighteenth-Century Woodworking Tools'': May 19-22 Well known historians, collectors, curators, and craftspeople who have specialized in the study of 18th- and early 19th-century woodworking tools will present the latest results of their research. Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer: May 28-30 Memorial Day weekend programs at Colonial Williamsburg commemorate events of 1774 protesting British treatment of the North American Colonies, including Parliament's closing of the port of Boston.

Bassett Hall: Tours of the Williamsburg home of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and its grounds are offered daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment. Admission to Bassett Hall is by Colonial Williamsburg Good Neighbor Card, Patriot's Pass or Museum Ticket. For more information, call (804) 220-7452.

Lanthorn Tours: Learn about the 18th-century social and economic worlds of this community on a guided tour through the candlelit streets and into work places of Colonial Williamsburg. Nightly during April, May and June at 8:30.

\ Musical programs

Bruton Parish Church by Candlelight: Musical program at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays during April, May and June.

Capitol Concert: A concert of vocal and instrumental music of 200 years ago in the candlelit hall of the House of Burgesses in the Capital Building. Sundays in April, May and June at 8:30 p.m. (May 29 will have an additional concert at 7 p.m.)

Musical Evening on Palace Green (Music Tour): A one-hour walking tour of the musical sites and sounds along Palace Green. Saturdays in April, May and June at 7 p.m. (May 28 will have an additional tour at 8:30 p.m.)

Dance Assembly at the Capitol: Visitors are transported into the Colonial past as they join 18th-century Virginians at an assembly or ball at the Capitol. Fridays in April and May at 8 and 8:30 p.m.

Governor's Evening Music: Members of the ``Governor's Musick,'' the Colonial Williamsburg resident ensemble, playing on authentic period musical instruments, present an elegant evening of instrumental and vocal music in the Governor's Palace ballroom. April 28 at 8 p.m. Thursdays in May and June at 8 p.m.

\ Militia and fifes and drums

Senior Fife and Drum Corps Retreat: The ceremony signaled the end of a soldier's day. Market Square at 5 p.m., Fridays in April, May and June 3, 10 and 17.

Evening March: Elements of the Fife and Drum Corps parade on Duke of Gloucester Street on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. beginning Wednesday.

Junior Fife and Drum Corps Parade: On Duke of Gloucester Street at noon on Saturdays.

The Military by Night - A Candlelight Tour: Soldiers serving in the Virginia State Garrison Regiment will discuss both camp life and battlefield situations. The tour will begin at the Magazine, proceed to the Military Encampment and return to the Magazine. ``Hands-on'' activities and military music enhance the program. Tuesdays in April and May and June 7, 14 and 21 at 7 and 8:30 p.m.

\ 18th-century plays

"Catharine and Petruchio:"The 18th-century rewrite by David Garrick of Shakespeare's ``The Taming of the Shrew''. At the Lodge Auditorium at 8:30 p.m., April 16 and 30; May 14 and 28; June 11 and 25.

"She Stoops to Conquer:" This play, one of the best-known and most durable of the 18th-century comedies, was written by Oliver Goldsmith and will be performed at the Lodge Auditorium at 8:30 p.m., April 23; May 7 and 21; June 4 and 18.
