HUNTING HILLS `OLDTIMERS' SHOOT TO FRONT

Saturday's first round of the first Hunting Hills 4-Ball Classic turned into an oldtimers party.

Don Ragland, only months shy of 55, and 66-year-old Rufus Spiers mastered gusting winds and combined for the day's only sub-par round - a 3-under 67 - to take a surprising three-shot into today's final round of the two-man best-ball tournament.

"How about that?" Spiers said. "Two old men . . . those youngsters ought to be ashamed."

The Blue Hills duo blew past the field with a 5-under 30 on the back nine, which included a stretch of five birdies from Nos. 10-15. Ragland, the 1972 Valley Amateur champion, had four of the birdies, firing a 3-under 32 on his own ball.

Danny Camper and Randy Combs were the only other duo to match par on the tight 6,037-yard layout, carding a 70.

The teams of Danny Hopkins-Jack Tuttle, Rodney Naff-Denton Willard and David Petrus-Mark White are tied for third at 71.
