The Stars, representing the Northwest Recreation Club, had two shots to win in the closing seconds, but Prince William prevailed 71-70 and advanced to the semifinals April 23 at William Fleming.
In other quarterfinal games, Richmond Metro Gold pounded Piedmont Pride 94-52, Boo Williams Peninsula routed Fauquier 97-56 and Boo Williams Hampton coasted past Waynesboro 57-39.
The only close games of the day involved Northwest, which defeated Boo Williams Virginia Beach 69-67 on a layup by Cave Spring High School sophomore Jeff Lang at the buzzer.
Lang finished with 19 points, as did William Fleming sophomore James Stokes, who blocked a shot, controlled the rebound and hit Lang with the outlet pass that led to the winning basket.
Northwest had 1 1/2 hours before its next game against Prince William Blue, which had received a bye as one of the top four seeds coming out of pool play.
"We were up by 10 for most of the first half," Northwest coach coach Mickey Hardy said, "but we couldn't keep it up. Lang had cramps and Stokes was sick to his stomach."
Northwest held for the last shot, setting a double screen for Keath Hampton. Even when Hampton missed, Stokes got the rebound and had a good look at the basket.
"It seemed like the ball sat on the rim for 10 seconds," Hardy said. "If you had blown on the ball, it would have gone in."
