Moss and Short were honored Friday during the annual Founders Day convocation.
Moss, who attended Tech in the late 1940s, earned his law degree from the University of Richmond. He has been a member of the House of Delegates since 1966 and has been speaker since 1991.
Short, a 1952 Tech graduate and former instructor, now serves as director of education for The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation. He spent 29 years at Exxon in a variety of management capacities.
Tech faculty members James LaPorte, James McKenna and Ray Plaut were this year's winners of the coveted Wine Award for excellence in teaching.
LaPorte, an education professor, was recognized for his work in the technology education program. McKenna, an associate professor of crop and soil environmental sciences, was cited for his "consistently outstanding level" of performance in various educational roles. And Plaut, a civil engineering professor, was singled out for his "outstanding record of scholarship and university service."
Receiving the Sporn Award for teaching introductory subjects this year was Patricia Amateis, who has been teaching general chemistry since 1985.
Steve Kampe, a member of Tech's Materials Science and Engineering department, won the Sporn Award for teaching engineering students.
Named Woman of the Year was Amy Coates. Scott Cappiello was honored as 1994 Man of the Year.
Among others honored during Founders Day this year:
English professor Johann A. Norstedt received the Alumni Excellence in Academic Advising award.
Richard Claus and Young-tsu the Alumni Awards for Excellence in Research.
Patrick Phipps and Thomas Rippen were recipients of the Alumni Award for Excellence in Extension.
Jacqueline Bixler and Philip "Sandy" Zeskind won the Alumni Teaching Excellence Awards.
Cathy Cripps received the Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Excellence Award.
Marc Dysart received the Graduate Student Service Excellence Award.
Five Tech staff members also were recognized as recipients of the President's Awards for Excellence:
Patricia Hall, program support technician in the University.
Lyle Harlow, who manages the Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Research Station.
Steve Mills, manager of public radio station WVTF.
Mike Jones, chief of the Virginia Tech Police Department.
Peggy Quesenberry, operational manager of the R&D lab in the Department of Clothing and Textiles.
Outstanding Student Awards went to Kara Hoffert, Raymond Calabro, Jeffrey Morrill, Scott Trexler and Christine Lawson. Also honored were Zion Lo, Nelson Lafon, Elizabeth Nicar and Jeffrey Zolkiewicz.
