ASSISTANT TO TAKE OVER UTILITY DIRECTOR'S DUTIES

The position of Roanoke County Utility Director Cliff Craig, who died suddenly last month, was filled Monday by his assistant, Gary Robertson.

Robertson will take over supervision of the Spring Hollow Reservoir and the county's planned water treatment system in the middle of the county's creation of its own water system.

Craig did much of the design and planning himself, saving the county millions of dollars. The pumps at the reservoir were officially turned on to begin filling shortly before Craig's death from a heart attack March 26 at age 51.

Robertson, a civil engineer, worked for the county from 1981 to 1988. After a five-year tour as director of engineering at Lumsden Associates land surveyors in Roanoke, he returned to work for the county as assistant utility director in December.
