ETC. PETTY SELECTS COMBS AS GRAND NATIONAL DRIVER

Rodney Combs recently was selected by Richard Petty as his driver on NASCAR's Busch Grand National series circuit.

"It's like being a boxer and having Cassius Clay in your corner," Combs said. "The name Richard Petty carries a lot of weight. Good things happen when you're associated with a legend like that."

Tim Capaldi, the first to race a blown alcohol hydro boat more than 200 mph, was killed Sunday in a crash at the International Hot Boat Association Spring Nationals in San Dimas, Calif. He was 31.

Capaldi, a three-time IHBA blown alcohol hydro world champion, crashed his boat going nearly 200 mph in a first-round elimination at Puddingstone Lake.

The reason for the crash was not immediately known, said Karin Mosher of Capaldi Racing.
