BAKER, Ervin E. 90, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on April 11, 1994. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation, with forty years of service. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two children, Ruth B. Jarvis and Lawrence T. (Buddy) Baker. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Ella C. Baker; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Doris Baker of Christiansburg; a sister, Moneta Carroll of Salem; a sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Everette Yates of Bluefield; a sister and brother-in-law, E.D. Rie and Roy Fisher of Christiansburg; a grandson and wife, Larry and Celia Jarvis; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Andrew Jarvi s, all of Crozier, Va., and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 14, 1994 at 2 pm at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem with the Rev. R. Stuart Carlton. The burial will follow at the Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 at the funeral home.
BEAMER, Benjamin Vinson, 86, of Bastian, died Tuesday, April 12, 1994 in a Bluefield, W. Va. hospital. He was born October 5, 1907 in Chapel, Va., the son of the late Lesley Broley and Alice Pearl Morris Beamer. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Sexton Beamer and a granddaughter, Wanda Yuvone Beamer. He was a member of the Wessendonck United Methodist Church. He is survives by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Hoosier Beamer; one daughter and son-in-law, Jo yce and Edwin Hall, Richmond; four sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Stella Beamer, Alexandria, Carl and Louise Beamer, Roanoke, Ralph and Ingrid Beamer, Bristol, Tenn., Edwin and Jennifer Beamer, Pulaski; four stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, James and Judy Hoosier, Rocky Gap, Marshall and Janet Hoosier, and Johnny and Colleen Hoosier, all of Salem, Gerald and Nancy Hoosier, Bastian; four sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Wyrick, Roanoke, Mrs. Goldie French, Blank, Mrs. Caroline French, Draper, Mrs. Lois Horsley, Salem; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; 26 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the A. Vest and Sons Funeral Home Chapel, white Gate, with the Rev. Jerry Long, the Rev. J. D. Clark and the Rev. Wayne Monroe officiating. Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. Visiting will be Wednesday after 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 pm. It is suggested that memorials be made to the Heart Fund.

DAVIDSON, Elsie Slough, 90, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, April 12, 1994 at Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Born June 27, 1903 in Buena Vista, she was the daughter of the late Horace Paxton and Mary Emma Holt Slough. She was retired from Bernson Silk Mill, a lifetime member of St. John's United Methodist Church, a life member of the Methodist Women, past president of American Legion Auxiliary and Winnie Davis Chapter V.D.C, past Noble Grand and Chaplin of Skyline Rebekah Lodge #91. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Davidson. Survivors include a daughter, Elsie Lee Floyd, Buena Vista; a brother, Warren H. Slough, Buena Vista; three grandchildren, Robert Curtis Floyd, Tucker, Ga., Karen Checca, Long Island, N. Y., and David Willia m Floyd, Mineral, Va.; and five great-grandchildren. FITZGERALD, Hansford Allie, age 92, of Lexington, died Tuesday, April 12, 1994, at his residence. Mr. Fitzgerald was born May 30, 1901, in Amherst County, Va., a son of the late Willis Fitzgerald and Nannie Mae Stinnett Fitzgerald. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Camden Fitzgerald, and a son Albert L. Fitzgerald. Surviving are a son, Frank Fitzgerald, Lexington; four daughters, Janie W. Fitzgerald, Lexington, Minnie F. Worth, Betty F. Hostetter, and Peggy F. Slagle, all of Buena Vista; one brother, Marvin Fitzgerald, Buena Vista; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and two special friends, G.W. and Frances Saunders of Glasgow. GAUTIER, Janie Lucas, 82 of Route #1, Narrows, died Tuesday morning April 12, 1994. A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born on July 4, 1911 and was the daughter of the late John Washington and Tiny Lee Spicer Lucas. She was a member of the North Narrows Tabernacle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Green Gautier. She is survived by 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Harry and Madeline Gautier, Bobby and Rita Gautier and Edward L. Gautier, all of Narrows; a brother, Willie Lucas, Gap Mills, WV; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren. HARLOW, Clyde S., 95, of Shelton, Wash., died Friday, April 8, 1994, from natural causes at Firlane Nursing Home, Shelton, Wash. She was the daughter of Edmund Burke Saunders and Lizzie Webster Saunders and the widow of Frank B. ""Pete"" Harlow, former employee of the Roanoke Times. Mrs. Harlow attended Ferrum Training School (Ferrum College) in Callaway, Va. and taught in a one room school at Bent Mountain, Va. She was the bookkeeper for Hornes Wholesale Millinery in Roanoke, Va. She is survived by two daughters, Marthe S. Carter, Union, Wash., and Edy Jo Southard, Charles Town, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Barry Carter, Richmond, Va., Sherry Abbey, Tallahassee, Fla., Karon Herron, Kahlotus, Wash., and Melissa Southard, Tallahassee, Fla.; and six great-grandchildren. HAYES, George Edgar, 89, of Salem, died Monday, April 11, 1994 in Richfield Nursing Center. Mr. Hayes was born in West Jefferson, North Carolina and lived in Salem for many years. He retired from the Clover Creamery after 35 years of service. He was a faithful member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church for over 60 years, where he was a former deacon and he was a member of the choir. Survivors include his wife, Helen F. Hayes; two sons, Stanley B. Hayes of Roanoke and E. Glen Hayes of Luthersville, Maryland; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Dean T. Hayes of Roanoke; a sister, Maggie S. Jones of West Jefferson, North Carolina. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 15, 1994, at 1 pm at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem with the Rev. Billy E. White, Jr. officiating. HOLTON, Gracia Heller, 72, of Pearisburg, died Tuesday, April 12, 1994, at her home. Mrs. Holton was born in Buffalo, N. Y. on August 26, 1955 and was a daughter of the late Charles Heller and Mary Elizabeth Wolfe Holton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Holton and a granddaughter, Danielle Neel. Mrs. Holton was a retired 1st Lt. in the United States Army Nursing Corp. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in -law, Honor and Richard Webb of Pearisburg, Va., Mary Beth Holton of Pearisburg, Va., Suzanne and David Neel of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren, Karen and John Myers of Blacksburg, Va., Brandon and Cortney Webb of Pearisburg, Va., Kendra Neel of Roanoke, Va. ROBINSON, Roger C., 51, of Salem, died Sunday, April 10, 1994. He graduated from Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy in 1967, where he was a member of the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Faternity. Mr. Robinson had been a practicing pharmacist in the Roanoke and Salem area since 1968. He was the president of Roger Robinson Pharmaceutical at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Beasley Robinson. Surviving are two children, Jason Fielding Robinson of Charlottesville and Mary Courtney Robinson of Fairfax, Va.; two sisters, Mildred Robinson Whitt of Radford, Bonnie Helen Robinson of Richmond; father, William Clayton Robinson of Radford. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel 11 a. m. Friday. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. SLEMONS, John D. Jr., (``David""), 43, of Salem, died Tuesday, April 12, 1994 after a long struggle with AIDS. A native of Harrisburg, Pa., he moved to Salem in 1992. He wa s employed by the Harrisburg State Police from June 9, 1969 to January 8, 1992, and worked for the Division of Transportation. He was a member of the Fourth United Church of Christ, Harrisburg, where he was choir baritone soloist and member of the Advisory and Community Outreach Committees. He also assisted with after school tutoring and Youth Fellowship programs. He was a member and past president of the Chamber Singers of Harrisburg and a community Board member. He also sang with the Harrisburg Men's Chorus and the choir at St. Patricks Cathedral. He was preceded in death by all of his grandparents. He is survived by his mother, Helen R. Slemons, Salem; father, John D. Slemons, Ocala, Fla.; three sisters, Linda S. Sutphin, Christiansburg, Deborah L. Conway, Roanoke, and Rhonda S. Garman, Catawba; several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the Shepler family, Charlie Dureka Jr., Dr. Doug Blevins and Helen of Lewis-Gale Clinic, Good Samaritan Hospice, close friends of Harrisburg, Pa., and the Roanoke AID's Project.
