"I think the most important interest that the town has was making sure it was something that was environmentally sound and the job creation," said Town Manager Mark Henne.
Rocky Mount Town Council unanimously voted Monday night to grant a conditional use permit to National Rubber Recycling Inc., a tire recycling concern based in San Antonio, Texas.
The operation, which will be named Virginia Rubber Recycling Inc., will initially generate about 30 new jobs, Marcus Haley, president of National Rubber Recycling, told town council. The number of jobs is expected to double within 18 months.
The company collects old tires, shreds them, and cuts the rubber into crumbs. Then, the rubber is reduced to a powder, which is sold for fuel and used to make new rubber products.
In addition to employing local residents, Henne said, the recycling company will collect tires from 13 counties, breathing additional life into area landfills.
The town approved the conditional use request provided that the company comply with certain requirements, such as maintaining an environmentally safe operation, minimizing noise, landscaping and storing all materials, including tires, inside of buildings or trailers.
These conditions were stipulated to ensure that the company stays in line with the town's interest in preserving the integrity of the industrial park and reducing potential environmental hazards.
"We didn't want to have things outside the building that were unattractive and that would keep other potential businesses away," Henne said.
