Junior designated hitter Steve Burtis went 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple for the Knights (5-3, 3-1). Michael Price (3-0) struck out six batters in six innings to earn the victory.
Mike McMahon and Richie Mason each had two hits for the Patriots (1-5, 1-2).
In other baseball:
Mark Freeland (2-1) pitched a three-hitter through six innings and struck out eight to lead Northside to a 10-6 victory over visiting William Fleming. At the plate for the Vikings (5-1-1), Scott Booth was 3-for-3 with two RBI, Brian Sells was 2-for-2 with one RBI and Nick Gibson was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
\ SOFTBALL: Tracy Doupnick pitched a no-hitter, giving up one walk and striking out 10 in seven innings for William Byrd as it blanked E.C. Glass 4-0. Sarah Hudson was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs for the Terriers (4-1-1).
Amber Vines was 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for James River, which remained undefeated by beating Glenvar 8-4 in a Pioneer District game. Sara Mundy (3-0) was the winning pitcher for the Knights (4-0, 2-0).
Dana Hurt drove in four runs for Roanoke Valley Christian, which ripped Carlisle 29-2 in a Blue Ridge Conference game in Martinsville. Hurt went 3-for-5 for the Eagles (3-0) and Jenny Coons drove in three runs on three hits.
Blair Calvert and Lisa Baetz drove in a total of 14 runs for North Cross, which pounded winless Stuart Hall 37-7. Calvert (2-2), who was also the winning pitcher, was 5-for-5 with two home runs and nine RBI. Baetz hit for the cycle and drove in five runs.
\ GIRLS SOCCER: Martinsville beat visiting North Cross 6-3 in two overtimes. Beth Kirby scored two of her four goals in the second extra period to lift the Bulldogs (3-0). Emily Cook scored all three goals for North Cross (0-4-1).
