SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE . . .

This week is dedicated to variety.

Results from basketball, volleyball, rugby.

Registration information for baseball, track and field, swimming, golf and a racing trip.

So without any further delay, here is what is going on and what has gone on in the world of recreation sports and activities in the New River Valley.

ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP: Christian Growth Center (6-8) downed the top two finishers from the regular season and captured the Christiansburg Men's Slowbreak Basketball League tournament championship.

In the finals, Christian Growth Center knocked off regular season champ Presbyterian I (11-3), 40-34.

Christian Growth Center reached the championship game by eliminating second-seeded Presbyterian II (9-4), 41-22.

The Rebels didn't finish the Christiansburg Men's Open Slowbreak season perfect. But they did finish in first place.

The Rebels (14-1) clinched the title with a 70-56 win over Triangle Lanes on their next-to-last game.

Triangle Lanes (13-2) ended up second in the 16-team league while First National Bank (12-3) won its last two games to finish third.

Shelor Toyota upset The Rebels 62-46 in the season finale.

Woodmen of the World (9-3) won the Christiansburg Women's Open League title.

SPIKES AND SERVES SET: There is no power in the Blacksburg Men's Power Volleyball League. After just two weeks, every team has a least one loss. Stump Jumpers (5-1) and Sting (5-1) are tied for first. Da Sooper Fans (4-2), the only unbeaten team after the first week of play, dropped its last two games against the Ground Hogs (3-3). Da Sooper Fans are tied with Unstables (4-2) for third.

Sugar & Spikes (2-0-1) is the only team without a loss in the Blacksburg Women's Power League. It opened the season with a bye and last week took two of three from Diggen It!. Sharkey's (5-1) is second while Total Chaos (4-2) and Kaleidoscope (4-2) are tied for third.

Aint Misbehavin (5-1) sits atop the Blacksburg Women's B League, just in front of Vertically Challenged (4-2) and Buns of Steel (6-3).

Total Control (5-0-1) has a half-game edge over Sporadic Spikers (5-1) in the Blacksburg Coed A Power League. Gumbies (4-2) is 11/2 out with KA (3-2-1) two games behind.

Not Mine (3-0) swept its match after a first week bye to take the lead in Blacksburg Coed B League Division 1. VTLS (4-2) and Team DVH (4-2) lead the league in acronyms and have the best records of teams which have played six games, putting them in a tie for second place.

Trouble Makers (5-1) are in front in Blacksburg Coed B League Division 2. The Enforcers (2-1) and Glade Baptist (4-2) are right behind.

The Smashers (8-1) have been smashing in the early going of the Christiansburg Coed Open League. They have three more wins than second place Spots (5-1). Century 21 (4-2) is in third place, the only other squad in the eight-team league with a winning record after two weeks.

The two teams from St. Paul Methodist - St. Paul II and St. Paul/Old Brick - emerged unscathed after the first week of play in the Christiansburg Coed Church A League with 3-0 records.

Half the league - Main Street Baptist III, Mt. Tabor, Cambria Baptist I and Belmont Christian - have 3-0 marks after one week's action in the Christiansburg Coed Church B League.

GOLF GATHERINGS: Now that the weather is turning spring-like (at least on some days), it is time to turn attention to out-of-door spots - like golf.

And for those who like to tee up, the Fourth Annual Gridiron Classic is just around the corner.

The tournament is May 21 at the Municipal Golf Course in Blacksburg with both 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. tee times available.

The cost is $140, which covers green fees, cart and favors for all players. Proceeds go to the Blacksburg High School football team to be used for equipment, camps or travel for the players.

Prizes include first, second and third place for each team as well as a closest-to-the-pin competition on the par-3 No. 3 and a hole-in-one award on the par-3 No. 6.

The tournament uses a captain's choice format for four-man teams with Mulligans available for purchase ($3 per person or $10 per team) on all but the specialty-prize holes.

Play is limited to the first 30 teams that register. The entry deadline is May 6.

For more information, call PAUL BOWYER at (703) 951-5706 (mornings) or (703) 951-5716 (evenings) or PAUL HYPES at (703) 961-1137.

RACING AROUND: As of last week there are still three tickets available for the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation trip to the First Union 400 at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) on Sunday.

The cost of $45 includes transportation and a race ticket.

For more information, call ART PRICE, director of parks and recreation, or CHUCK MUNCY, the supervisor of athletics, at (703) 382-2349.

TRACK TIME: There is more to track and field than just running, jumping and throwing. Thus the Christiansburg Department of Parks and Recreation is holding a youth track-and-field clinic.

The clinic is open to all youths in grades 3-5. The cost is $7 for town residents and $12 for nonresidents. The deadline for registering is Friday.

The programs are one day a week and last for five weeks. They begin Tuesday at Falling Branch Elementary and Thursday at Christiansburg Elementary. The clinics start at 3:30 p.m. and last one hour.

Participants must wear shorts and/or sweats and appropriate footwear.

For more information, call the rec department at (703) 382-2349.

BATS AND BALLS: Hitting, pitching and fielding are the most important elements of baseball. They also are the subjects for three youth clinics offered by the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department.

The hitting clinic will be April 30 at 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The pitching clinic is April 30 at 3-7 p.m. And the fielding and throwing clinic is May 7 at 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Clinics are open to youths ages 6-14. The cost is $8 for town residents and $13 for nonresidents. The last day to register is April 22.

For more information, call the rec department at (703) 382-2349.

SWIMMINGLY SIGN-UPS: The Blacksburg Sunfish swim team will hold its summer registration at the Blacksburg Aquatic Center April 18-22.

Registration will take place at 4-5:30 p.m. each day.

The Sunfish offer the opportunity for school-age youths at all skill levels to compete against teams from throughout the region. Meets are held every Monday night during the summer season, leading up to the championship meet July 29-30.

For more information, call (703) 951-0734 or call the Sunfish Hotline at (703) 953-2987.

RUGGERS UPDATE: The Blacksburg Men's Rugby Club fell last week to Virginia Beach 20-16. The boys from the beach pulled out the victory when they scored a try (worth four points with the opportunity of additional two-point conversion) in the final minute.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Montgomery County is looking for people to assist with the recreation department's programs. Open positions include volunteer baseball coaches and paid baseball umpires, softball umpires, golf instructors, tennis instructors and score keepers. Sponsors for youth baseball teams also are needed.

To serve in any of these capacities, call TIM COONEY, the athletics supervisor, at (703) 382-6975.
