BUSINESSMAN, CIVIC LEADER GARDEN DIES

Henry R. Garden Jr., the retired chief executive officer of Old Virginia Brick Company and a former Salem city councilman, died Monday. He was 76.

A Salem native, Garden was a member of the council from 1964 to 1970 - the period during which Salem went through the transition from town to city status.

Garden was born directly across from the brick company, founded in 1890 by George Pierpont - who came to Roanoke County from New England. Garden's father, the late H.R. Garden, preceded his son as president of the company.

Henry Garden reopened the plant as president and returned it to prominence in 1945 after serving as an officer in the Army Air Corps during World War II. The brick company was closed during the war because of lagging construction work.

Garden was also active in the community having served as president and director of the Salem Chamber of Commerce, and vice president and director of Farmers National Bank of Salem.
