ALLEGHANY RUNNERS DOMINATE TRACK MEET

In Vinton, Alleghany won a Blue Ridge District track and field meet against William Byrd 67-59 as Devon Godfrey scored firsts in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Jeremy Bartley was first in the 3,200 and second in the 1,600.

For Byrd, Barry Myvette was first in the triple jump and 400-meter dash. He was also third in the 200 and the long jump. Jan Cox was first in the long jump, second in the triple jump and third in the 100.

In other boys' track:

Glenvar (74 points) won a three-way Pioneer District meet against James River (52) and Parry McCluer (28). The Highlanders were paced by double winners in Chad Pack in the 400- and 800-meter runs; Eric Moorefield in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles; and Chad Wallace in the long and triple jumps. Parry McCluer's D.J. Douglas in the 100- and 200-meter dashes was the only other double winner.

Karim Thompson won the 200 and 400 dashes and anchored the 1,600-meter relay team to lead Northside to a dual meet victory over Rockbridge County. Stuart Bray won the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs for the Vikings.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: Glenvar (72 points) won a three-way Pioneer District meet against James River (54) and Parry McCluer (20) as Trish Nervo won both the mile (5:33.0) and the two-mile (12:17.0) to break her own school records in those events. The Highlanders' Cathy Wilson set a school record in the discus with a toss of 90 feet, 10 inches.

James River's Melissa Baker won three events, taking the 100-meter hurdles, 100-meter run and the long jump.

At William Byrd, Alleghany swamped the Terriers 87-36 in a Blue Ridge District meet as Andrea Moore was first in the discus, triple jump and high jump. Jenny Rago was first in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles, and nd in the triple jump. Tracy Chapman was first in the 200 and had a pair of seconds in the 100 and long jump while Elizabeth Chiles was first in the shot and second in the discus for Byrd.

Emily Hollett of Northside won the discus, high jump and 400 meters, and finished second in the long jump, triple jump and 200 meters to lead the Vikings to a dual meet victory over Rockbridge County. Kara Thompson of Northside won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. a\ BASEBALL: At Pearisburg, Carroll County demolished Giles 14-1. The Cavaliers' Kevin Dalton went the distance for the victory by allowing just four hits and striking out 13. Carroll County was led by Eric Spencer with three hits. Giles slips to 2-4.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Rocky Mount, Franklin County defeated Magna Vista 13-1 in a non-district game as Jonathan Seale scored two goals and had three assists and Keith Mattson had two goals and two assists for the Eagles (3-2-1).\

In Roanoke at the Sports Complex, William Fleming beat Alleghany 6-1 as Kevin Graham scored three times. The Colonels are 5-0.

In Martinsville, Marty Martin and Quim Borres scored two goals each and Byron Reeves had two assists as Martinsville dominated Laurel Park 7-0 in the Piedmont District. The Bulldogs improved their record to 5-1, 2-0. Laurel Park is 0-4, 0-3.

\ SOFTBALL: In Bedford, Karla Goff (4-2) pitched a no-hitter as Liberty blanked Staunton River 8-0 in the Seminole District.

The junior right-hander struck out 13. She received offensive support from Heather Dooley (4-for-4 with a triple and a double) and Candy Gordon (two-run homer) as the Minettes improved their record to 4-2 overall and in the district. Staunton River is 2-4 overall and in the district.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: In Ridgeway, Amy Lucci had four goals to lead Salem to a 7-0 victory over Magna Vista. Heather Moore added a goal and four assists, and Becky Rose had a pair of goals for the Spartans (1-0-1).
