ROANOKE ROLLS TO ODAC WIN IN LACROSSE

Roanoke College defeated Randolph-Macon 20-12 on Wednesday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game in Salem.

The Maroons (6-5 overall, 4-1 in the ODAC) were led by senior Erik Daly, who scored five goals and had one assist for the 10th-ranked team in the lastest NCAA Division III poll.

Roanoke's J.J. Blatt added three goals and two assists, and James Kammerman scored three goals and set up one. The Yellow Jackets, ranked 19th, are 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

After trailing 5-4 in the second period, the Maroons scored the last nine goals of the half to take a 13-5 lead. Roanoke plays its final regular-season home game at 3 p.m. Saturday against seventh-ranked Denison.

In other college sports in the region:

In Charlottesville, Cherie Greer and Anna Yates had five goals and two assists each to lead fourth-ranked Virginia to an 18-6 rout of James Madison in women's lacrosse.

The Cavaliers (8-1) have won five in a row; the Dukes' record slipped to 5-7.

In Bridgewater, Kirsten Wagner had four goals and four assists to lead Roanoke (7-2, 4-1) to a 17-7 women's lacrosse victory over Bridgewater in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Nicki Keeney had six goals and an assist for Bridgewater.

Hampden-Sydney edged Lynchburg by three strokes in the team competition, and two golfers shared medalist honors in the Lynchburg College/ODAC Invitational golf tournament at London Downs.

Lynchburg's Paul Gartland and Roanoke College's Chris Lawson tied for the top individual spot at 6-over-par 78. Roanoke (335) finished third in the team standings, nine strokes behind Lynchburg, and Washington and Lee (340) was fifth.

Ferrum opens play in the Dixie Conference baseball tournament today when the Panthers take on Christopher Newport at 3:30 p.m. at Dan Daniels Memorial Park in Danville.

Ferrum (20-3, 6-3), ranked 17th in the latest NCAA Division III poll by the American Baseball Coaches Association, is the second seed. The Captains (6-19-1, 2-6) are seeded fifth.

In the opener, top-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan (27-1, 10-0) takes on sixth-seeded Greensboro (9-20, 1-8) at noon. The Battlin' Bishops are ranked first in the nation.

At 7 p.m., third-seeded Methodist (17-8-1, 6-4) plays fourth-seeded Shenandoah (15-12-1, 3-7).

The tournament continues through Sunday.

Virginia Tech's baseball game at Virginia on Wednesday was postponed because of rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader at 1 p.m. April 20 in Blacksburg. . . . The Bristol-Radford baseball game Wednesday at Radford also was postponed. No makeup date was set.
