CHRISTIANSBURG BATS POUND AUBURN 22-5

Christiansburg battered Auburn 22-5 in a non-district baseball game Wednesday in Riner.

Ryan Hubble and Donnie Tawney each had three hits and scored three runs for the Blue Demons. Hubble also knocked in four runs, and Tawney plated three.

David Epperly had one hit for the Blue Demons (3-4), but he drove in four runs. Auburn's record drops to 1-5.

In other baseball:

In Pearisburg, Carroll County demolished Giles 14-1. The Cavaliers' Kevin Dalton went the distance for the victory by giving up only four hits and striking out 13. Carroll County was led by Eric Spencer with three hits. Giles' record slips to 2-4.

\ BOYS' TRACK: Glenvar (74 points) won a three-way Pioneer District meet with James River (52) and Parry McCluer (28). The Highlanders were paced by double-winners Chad Pack (400- and 800-meter runs); Eric Moorefield (110 and 300 hurdles); and Chad Wallace (long and triple jumps). Parry McCluer's D.J. Douglas (100 and 200) was the only other double winner.

Lord Botetourt won 72-70 at Salem in a triangular meet as the Cavaliers won the mile relay when the Spartans didn't enter a team. Roanoke Catholic was third with 21 points.

Salem's Mike Murphy won three events - the long and triple jumps and the 200.

Karim Thompson won the 200 and 400 and anchored the 1,600 relay team to lead Northside to a 77-59 victory over Rockbridge County. Stuart Bray won the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Vikings.

In Floyd, the Buffaloes took a four-way Mountain Empire District meet from Narrows, Galax and Grayson County as Ben Cook had firsts in the 800 and 1,600. Benje Osborne also took the long and triple jumps. Neal Thompson of Galax was a double winner in the hurdles.

Christiansburg, led by Andre Beasley who won the long jump and shot put, defeated Patrick Henry and Pulaski County in a non-district meet. Jeremy Cosgriff won both distance runs for the Blue Demons. Patrick Henry's Jamie Price won 100 and 200. Pulaski County's Carson Graham won both hurdles events.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: Glenvar (72 points) won a three-way Pioneer District meet with James River (54) and Parry McCluer (20) as Trish Nervo won the mile (5:33.0) and the two-mile (12:17.0) to break her own school records in those events. The Highlanders' Cathy Wilson set a school record in the discus with a toss of 90 feet, 10 inches.

Amy Pitts (both hurdles), Shannell Manning (100, 400) each won two events as Salem beat Lord Botetourt 82-51 on the Spartans' track. Roanoke Catholic was third with eight points.

In Floyd, Monica Lucas won the 100, 200, 400, long jump and triple jump to pace an easy victory Floyd County in a four-way Mountain Empire District meet with Narrows, Galax and Grayson County.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: In Rocky Mount, Franklin County defeated Magna Vista 13-1 in a non-district game as Jonathan Seale scored two goals and had three assists and Keith Mattson added two goals and two assists for the Eagles (3-2-1).

In Roanoke, William Fleming beat Alleghany 6-1 as Kevin Graham scored three times. The Colonels are 5-0.

\ SOFTBALL: In Bedford, Karla Goff (4-2) pitched a no-hitter as Liberty blanked Staunton River 8-0 in the Seminole District.

The junior right-hander struck out 13. She received offensive support from Heather Dooley (4-for-4 with a triple and a double) and Candy Gordon (two-run homer) as the Minettes improved their record to 4-2 overall and in the district. Staunton River is 2-4 overall and in the district.
