NERVO SETS THE PACE FOR GLENVAR VICTORY

Glenvar (72 points) won a Pioneer District girls' track and field meet Wednesday with James River (54) and Parry McCluer (20). Trish Nervo finished first in the mile (5 minutes, 33.0 seconds) and the two-mile (12:17.0), breaking her own Highlanders records in both events.

Glenvar's Cathy Wilson also set a school record, winning the discus with a toss of 90 feet, 10 inches.

James River's Melissa Baker won three events - the 100-meter hurdles, 100-meter dash and the long jump.

In other girls' track and field:

Amy Pitts (both hurdles), Shannell Manning (100, 400) each won two events as Salem beat Lord Botetourt 82-51 in a triangular meet on the Spartans' track. Roanoke Catholic was third with eight points.

Visiting Alleghany swamped William Byrd 87-36 in a Blue Ridge District meet as Andrea Moore was first in the discus, triple jump and high jump for the Mountaineers. Tracy Chapman was first in the 200, and Elizabeth Chiles won the shot put for the Terriers.

Emily Hollett won the discus, high jump and 400, and finished second in the long jump, triple jump and 200 to lead Northside to a 76-50 victory over Rockbridge County. The Vikings' Kara Thompson won the 1,600 and 3,200.

\ BOYS' TRACK: Visiting Alleghany won a Blue Ridge District meet against William Byrd 67-59 as Devon Godfrey finished first in the 100 and 200.

For the Terriers, Barry Myvette was first in the triple jump and 400.

Glenvar (74 points) won a three-way Pioneer District meet with James River (52) and Parry McCluer (28). The Highlanders were paced by double-winners Chad Pack (400, 800), Eric Moorefield (110 and 300 hurdles) and Chad Wallace (long and triple jumps).

Lord Botetourt edged Salem 72-70 in a triangular meet as the Cavaliers won the mile relay when the Spartans didn't enter a team. Roanoke Catholic was third with 21 points.

Salem's Mike Murphy won the long and triple jumps and the 200.

Karim Thompson won the 200 and 400 and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay team to lead Northside to a 77-59 victory over Rockbridge County. Stuart Bray won the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Vikings.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: William Fleming beat visiting Alleghany 6-1 as Kevin Graham scored three times. The Colonels are 5-0.

\ SOFTBALL: In Bedford, Karla Goff (4-2) pitched a no-hitter as Liberty blanked Staunton River 8-0 in the Seminole District.

The junior right-hander struck out 13. She received offensive support from Heather Dooley (4-for-4 with a triple and a double) and Candy Gordon (two-run homer) as the Minettes improved their record to 4-2 overall and in the district. Staunton River is 2-4 overall and in the district.

Northside remained unbeaten as Shannon Yopp pitched a two-hitter in a 5-0 victory over visiting Patrick Henry.

Yopp struck out nine and did not walk a batter en route to her third victory and the Vikings' third. Erin Weaver and Stacy Byrd each had two stolen bases for Northside.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: In Ridgeway, Amy Lucci had four goals to lead Salem to a 7-0 rout of Magna Vista. Heather Moore added a goal and four assists, and Becky Rose had a pair of goals for the Spartans (1-0-1).

Emily Bryant scored three goals, and Meredith Bowden and Ayisha Whitenack added two each as Patrick Henry overpowered Martinsville 9-1 in a battle of previously unbeaten teams.

The Patriots improved their record to 4-0; Martinsville is 3-1.
