RELIGION BRIEFS

THE ROANOKE CHAMBER SINGERS, formed last year of solo-caliber musicians, will present the Easter portions of "Messiah" by Handel on May 8 at 4 p.m. at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, 402 Second St.

\ Frank Morris directs the group, which specializes in church music of Latin background, English and Russian folk tunes, songs of the stage and spirituals. Sixteen singers are in the choir, which has performed at both church and secular functions around the Roanoke Valley.\ Nancy Delaney will be organist for the May program.

\ DICK and EDITH SCHISLER, missionaries in Brazil who have been supported by Greene Memorial United Methodist Church for many years, will retire at the end of 1994 as they complete supervision of a nursing care facility in Florianopolis. This is the last of more than a dozen churches, schools and medical facilities the couple has inspired in their work as missionaries. Edith Schisler is a daughter of the late Frank and Eula Long, Roanokers who also spent many years in Brazilian mission work and attended Greene Memorial.

\ A WRITING SEMINAR to help church members produce more effective newsletters, inspirational articles, seasonal materials and devotional stories for children is scheduled Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, 728 Highland Ave. S.E. Barbara K. Shaffer, a Roanoker with experience in marketing, writing and editing for church people, will lead the seminar. The fee of $24.95 includes luncheon and materials. Call 772-2623 or 342-7511. Registration will be at 8:30 a.m.

\ THE REV. GORDON LANGLIE has joined the staff of Woodland Church near Fincastle as its new minister of visitation. He was pastor of Woodland from 1973 to 1976 and upon retirement returned to the Midwest, where he helped start six new churches. He is a graduate of St. Olaf College and Luther Northwestern Seminary, both in Minnesota. He is accompanied by his wife, Helen.

Woodland Church also will sponsor its annual Bible conference Friday through Monday.

\ AT WILLIAMS MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH, 2105 Carroll Ave. N.W., several Roanoke Valley choirs will perform Sunday at 6 p.m. under sponsorship of the Senior Choir.

\ A BIBLE CONFERENCE, led by Ivan French of Warsaw, Ind., will be in session Sunday through Wednesday at Patterson Memorial Grace Brethren Church, 5512 Hollins Road. Special music will be presented for the programs on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. and on weeknights at 7:30. A nursery will be staffed. Call 362-0336 for more information.

\ HUNTINGTON COURT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH is one of several Virginia congregations recently recognized by the Virginia Council of Churches for its Bread and Stones Assistance to Children program. For several years, 20 volunteers from the Williamson Road parish have worked in an after-school tutoring and recreation program for 35 pupils in a nearby elementary school. The Discover program , which runs for two 12-week periods, offers values training and enrichment activities to children who would otherwise be without adequate supervision. Bread and Stones, an ecumenical group, sponsored a recent conference that brought 50 church members together to plan for the specialized needs of children.

\ THE REV. TAMMY ESTEP, associate pastor of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church since 1990, will enter mission service at the end of the annual conference year in June. Estep said her decision to take a leave of absence from a church assignment was prompted by a trip to the poor in Jamaica last year. She will enter the Servant Leadership School in Washington and work part time in inner-city missions for a least a year.

\ RETA MICHELL, who has been pianist, organist and in other music leadership at Garden City Baptist Church for 30 years, was honored recently for her services there.
