PATRICK T. McHUGH, sales manager for Moore's Lumber and Building Supplies, was selected as recipient of the 1993 Presidents Award.

The award was given in appreciation of his efforts to stimulate improvements, enhancing existing programs and implementing new approaches.

\ JOHN R. McADEN, a vice president for Balzer and Associates, Inc., Planners, Architects, Engineers and Surveyors, has met the Virginia requirements to become a land surveyor.

McAden joined the firm nine years ago in the Chesterfield office.

\ WILLIAM H. SPENCER III and WALTER J. BAUMOEL, employees of The Franklin Life Insurance Company, recently were recognized as top agency associates.

Baumoel, an insurance executive, and Spencer, a general agent, were named to membership in the Franklin Million Dollar Conference. The conference is an organization of national sales and sales management leaders.

Spencer was also named to membership in Franklin's Centurion Club, an organization of the company's most successful sales associates.

\ H.C. "PEE WEE" BECKNER was awarded a fellowship in the Order of the Isosceles by the Blue Ridge chapter of the Professional Construction Estimators Association of America.

Members in the order support young people in their construction industry education. Beckner was given the honor for his outstanding service to the industry and the PCEA.

Beckner is a 40-year veteran of the construction industry and a member of the Blue Ridge chapter board of directors for PCEA.

\ DR. DARREL F. POWLEDGE, of Lewis-Gale Clinic Inc., recently received his board certification as a specialist in occupational medicine from the American Board of Preventive Medicine Inc.

Powledge has practiced occupational medicine at Lewis-Gale Clinic since 1987.

\ JUDY L. SHAFFER, daughter of Harold and Jerry Shaffer of Roanoke, recently passed all portions of the Vermont Certified Public Accounting examination. She is a 1989 graduate of Roanoke College.

\ BARBARA M. THORNHILL recently was awarded the Secretary's Hands and Heart Award by the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The annual award recognizes sustained, compassionate and thoughtful patient care. Thornhill is an acute medical nurse.

\ ADIA PERSONNEL SERVICES of Roanoke has received the organization's President's Club award.

The award is given to the top 10 producing franchises in the organization. Lynn Miller of the Roanoke franchise accepted the award.

\ MICHAEL TERRY JUSTUS, assistant manager of Henebry's Jewelers, recently completed the Diamond Council of America's course in diamontology and is now registered as a certified diamontologist.

Justus has an associate degree from Northern Virginia Community College.

\ CHARLES R. SHRADER of Roanoke recently received a SAMMY award from the Sales and Marketing Executives of Richmond.

The award recognizes his accomplishments as a regional sales manager for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia in 1993.

\ TERESA SEVERIN of Teresa Severin Marketing has been named Rookie of the Year for 1993 by Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association Inc.

Severin was selected for the award because she recruited new members, attended a required number of meetings and events, became a member of the Sales and Marketing Council, served on the Associate Advisory Council and is chairwoman of the association's monthly publication.

\ THE ROANOKE VALLEY PARALEGAL ASSOCIATION recently elected the following officers for 1994: Lois A. Sumpter, president and member of the board of directors; Sarah Ferguson, vice president; Beth Ritter, secretary; and Casey Dugan, treasurer.

Margie Bowman, Pamela Eakin, Lee Slenker and Laura Skeen were elected to the board of directors.

\ DONALD L. HELMS, senior manager of the Roanoke No. 3 Branch of Avco Financial Services, recently was named to the company's distinguished Circle of Excellence.

Winners were rated on service and performance. Helms received the award by placing in the top 15 percent of all Avco branch managers in his operating area for 1993.

\ LIN CHAFF, owner of Lin Chaff Public Relations and Advertising, and BYRON L. YOST, First Union Bank, have been named to the board of directors of the YMCA of Roanoke Valley.

Chaff is owner of Lin Chaff Public Relations and Advertising. Yost is president for the Roanoke area for First Union National Bank of Virginia.
