Hampton Industries Inc., a Kingston, N.C., designer and maker of natural fiber clothing, said Wednesday it will close a manufacturing facility in Kingston affecting about 210 employees. The company said escalating U.S. production costs have caused the products made at the Kingston plant to lose their competitive advantage to imports.

United Dominion Realty Trust Inc., Richmond-based real estate investment trust holding apartment property in the Roanoke Valley, said it has bought River Place Apartments in Macon, Ga., for $8.52 million from Pinnacle Partners Inc. of Macon. River Place is a 240-unit garden apartment community on 20 acres.

R.E. Lee and Son Inc., a Charlottesville contractor, said it has been awarded two contracts in Western Virginia. The company will build a $3.49 million addition and alteration to Preston Hall at Radford University. The project, designed by Pape/Cole & Associates of Roanoke and Norfolk, is to be completed by April 1995. The company also was awarded the contract to build $5 million of additions and alternations to Major Williams Hall at Virginia Tech. The project, designed by Hanbury, Evans, Newill, Vlattas & Co. of Norfolk, is to be completed in May 1995.

The Virginia Office of Weights and Measures will hold its annual certification of farmers' scales May 4, 8-11 a.m., at the Salem Farmers Market, and 1-5 p.m. at the Roanoke Farmers Market; on May 5, 8-11 a.m., at the Roanoke market and 1-5 p.m. at the Salem market; and on May 6, 8-11 a.m. at the Salem market and 1-5 p.m. at the Roanoke market. State law says scales of hucksters selling from trucks and individuals selling at their homes must be tested prior to use for sales.

Three lawyers, formerly principals of the White Elliott & Bundy law firm in Abingdon, Bristol and Johnson City, Tenn., have formed a new firm, Elliott Lawson & Pomrenke, with offices in the First Union Bank Building in Bristol. The founders are James E. Green, who represents creditors in commercial litigation and bankruptcy; Steven R. Minor, who handles commercial litigation and represents management in labor and employment law; and Kyle P. Macione, who represents businesses and individuals in transactional and tax matters.
