Winners announced in Doctors' Day race

Howard Nippert of Blacksburg won the 1994 Doctors' Day 8K run held March 27 in Roanoke. Nipper, 28, finished the course in 25 minutes and 31 seconds.

Jay Johns, 19, of Blacksburg was second; Chris Camren, 21, of Washington, D.C., was third.

In the women's division, Newport's Lori Taylor was the winner with 31 minutes and four seconds. Taylor, 31, finished ninth overall. Kara Kaufman, 19, of Blacksburg, was second; Heather Osborne, 18, of Troutville was third.

Charles Warner, 34, of Roanoke, with a time of 30 minutes and 40 seconds, won the doctors division. Enrique Silberblatt, 41, of Troutville was second; Chuck Gilliland, 49, of Roanoke was third.

\ State rugby tourney will be at Salem Park

The Roanoke County Parks and Recreation Department and the Roanoke Rugby Club recently were selected as hosts of the 1994 Virginia State Rugby Tournament.

The tournament will be held Oct. 29-30 at Green Hill Park in Salem.

\ Golf tournament will benefit soccer club

The fourth annual Corned Beef & Co. Classic Golf Tournament will be held at 1 p.m. May 1 at Hanging Rock Golf Course.

Proceeds from the tournament will be used to build and maintain fields at the Roanoke Valley Youth Soccer Club's new soccer complex.

All teams must have A, B, C and D level players. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers.

The entry fee is $240 per foursome, made payable to Corned Beef & Co. Mail entries to Corned Beef & Co., 107 S. Jefferson St., Roanoke, Va. 24011, attn: Mariah.

\ Annual community college run is May 7

The 13th annual Virginia Western Community College 5,000-meter run will be held at 9 a.m. May 7.

Entries made by April 27 must include a $5 fee. The late entry fee is $7.

Runners will compete in age divisions, with prizes awarded to the first three finishers, and to the first male and female finishers in the 40 and over Masters category. The first three finishers in each age division will receive medals.

There is also an open-team competition, but teams must register before the day of the race.
