ETC. UVA WOMEN SIGN TOP BASKETBALL RECRUIT

Mimi McKinney, a second-team Parade All-America selection, has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Virginia.

The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 22.2 points, 11.7 rebounds, four steals and four assists per game this season for Peninsula High School in Palos Verdes, Calif. That school also produced former Cavaliers Heather and Heidi Burge, as well as UVa center Jeffra Gausepohl.

This season's UVa team honored Wendy Palmer as Cavalier of the Year at its banquet Thursday night. Wendy Toussaint received the Leadership and Unsung Hero awards.

Sophomore tailback Dwayne Thomas rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns as Virginia Tech prepared for Saturday night's spring game at Salem Stadium with a controlled scrimmage in Blacksburg.

Thomas, a rising junior from Fort Myers, Fla., scored on runs of 51, 14 and 3 yards. Quarterback Maurice DeShazo completed nine of 16 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

In Charleston, S.C., the Radford University men's and women's tennis teams were ousted in the first round of the Big South Conference tournament.

The men, seeded third, were upset 4-2 by sixth-seeded Winthrop after Highlanders star Rachid Benjelloun had to default because of a shoulder injury.

The women, seeded fifth, dropped a 6-1 decision to fourth-seeded North Carolina-Greensboro.

Virginia, the three-time defending NCAA men's soccer champion, plays a scrimmage against Maryland at 5 p.m. today at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville. On Sunday, the Cavaliers will hold an alumni game at 1 p.m. followed at 2:30 by a scrimmage against American University. The games are open to the public, with no admission charged.
