The supervisors voted Monday to share 25 percent of the lawyer's fee with Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Virginia Tech.
The university and the local governments are looking into forming a separate authority that could then join the New River Resource Authority.
The New River authority, which includes Radford, Pulaski County and the towns of Pulaski and Dublin, has a permit for a new landfill to be located on 350 acres on the south side of Cloyds Mountain. It is in the midst of condemnation proceedings to obtain the land.
Montgomery has been negotiating with the authority since the fall to find a long-term solution to its solid waste disposal. The current Mid-County Landfill off U.S. 460 is due to run out of space by the end of the decade.
But to make the county's participation economical, it would need trash from the towns and Tech.
The issue that needs resolution is whether the county, Tech and the towns can legally form a separate authority. Lawyer Daniel M. Siegel, bond counsel for the New River Resource Authority, will be the independent legal counsel.
