AREA POST OFFICES GOING EXTRA MILE FOR TAX FILERS

In a letter to Jean-Baptiste Leroy, Nov. 13, 1789, Benjamin Franklin commented on the new Constitution, then penned these famous words: "in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."

The certainty of taxes hits home today, the final day for mailing 1993 income tax forms. Those who wait until the final hours will find the New River Valley Mall and some of the local post offices making special arrangements to accommodate them.

New River Valley Mall:

A Tax Blues Party will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. in center court with WBNK Kool Country 100.7-FM broadcasting. The first 100 people who bring their taxes to be mailed (by midnight by radio station officials) will receive a free lottery ticket for Saturday night's drawing. Charley's Restaurant will feature some Tax Blues Party specials.

Post Offices:

Blacksburg: 909 University Blvd. Open until midnight, full window service. Mailboxes outside will be emptied and postmarked at midnight. Tax assistance, 3 p.m.-midnight, provided by Beta Alpha Psi, a Virginia Tech accounting fraternity. WPSK, 107.1-FM, broadcasting 10 p.m.-midnight. Free coffee and donuts, and free 29-cent stamps for first 107 people who come to mail tax returns after 10 p.m., courtesy of WPSK.

NOTE: The last pick-up at the downtown mailboxes is 5:30 p.m.

Christiansburg: 2 E. Main St. Mail deposited in outside mailboxes before midnight will be postmarked April 15. The post office will close at the regular time of 5 p.m.

Dublin: 300 E. Main St. Open until midnight, limited window service for weighing envelopes and selling stamps. WPSK 107.1-FM will broadcast 10 p.m.-midnight. Free coffee and donuts and free 29-cent stamps to first 107 people mailing tax returns after 10 p.m. courtesy of WPSK.

Pulaski: 109 N. Washington Ave. Open until midnight, full window service. Will empty outside boxes at midnight.

Radford: 1007 Norwood St. Will have special mailbox outside for tax returns until midnight. All envelopes must have stamps. No clerks on duty.
