FLOYD'S MARSHALL NO-HITS ROCKY GAP IN BASEBALL

Phillip Marshall helped Floyd County start its Mountain Empire District schedule with a bang, pitching a no-hitter as the Buffaloes defeated Rocky Gap 12-0 on Friday in Floyd.

Marshall, a senior right-hander, struck out six and walked one.

Catcher Peter Bucklin went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in for Floyd (7-1 overall, 1-0 district), and shortstop Sammy Burton was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Eagles are 1-6 and 0-1.

In other baseball:

In Rocky Mount, David Webster (2-1) pitched a one-hitter as Franklin County beat Patrick Henry 10-0 in a Roanoke Valley District game shortened to five innings because of the "slaughter rule."

Riley Hodges went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Sheldon Bower was 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Eagles (6-2, 4-0). Ryan Johnston had the lone hit for PH (1-5, 1-3).

In Pulaski, Mike Souma went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and an RBI for William Fleming as the Colonels held off a rally to defeat Pulaski County 11-8 in a Roanoke Valley District matchup.

William Fleming (2-8, 1-3) scored seven runs in the first inning. Trey Gunn went 2-for-4 and Al Holland Jr. had a stolen base and two RBI for the Colonels.

Pitcher Greg Dunkin threw a complete game, striking out four and walking one.

Timmy Davis went 4-for-4 with three singles and a triple for Pulaski County (3-5, 1-3) and pitcher Jason Corbin went 3-for-4 with three triples, a double and three RBI.

In the New River District opener for both teams, Radford (5-7) rolled to a 15-6 victory over Blacksburg (2-5). Ryan Brittle had three hits in three at-bats with two RBI, and Derek Englehard added three hits in four at-bats with three RBI to pace the offense. Blacksburg's Jay Safford went 2-for-3 and Clay Scott was 3-for-4. Pitcher Brian Smith homered for the Indians.

Kevin Anderson smashed a three-run homer in the first inning as Grayson County swamped Galax 17-1 in the Mountain Empire District opener for both teams.

Teammate Bobby Cheeks went 2-for-4, hit a home run, scored four runs and had three RBI for the Blue Devils (5-3, 1-0).

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Blacksburg, the 1993 Group AA state champion, downed visiting Christiansburg 4-1.

The Blue Demons (5-2, 0-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Sam Nokuri, who played for the Indians last year. Blacksburg (6-0-1, 2-0) rallied on goals by Steve Cherry and two by Gregg Adamo to take a 3-1 lead at intermission.

In Rocky Mount, Franklin County tied GW-Danville 3-3 in a non-district game. Keith Mattson had two goals and an assist to lead Franklin County (2-2-2). Paul Lawrence scored two for GW (1-3-1).

In Pearisburg, Giles tied Marion 1-1 in a non-district game. Giles got the tie when Jason Butler scored. Giles is 2-3-1.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At River's Edge, unbeaten Patrick Henry won its fifth game by beting Magna Vista 4-0 in a non-district contest as Holly Spraker, Ayisha Whitenack, Sarah Mercer and Sarah Sharpley scored goals.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Two-time defending Group A state champion Glenvar rolled to a 8-1 victory over Floyd County on the Highlanders' court. Nick Varney, Josh Williamson and Glen Hambrick remained unbeaten in singles this spring. Varney is a two-time Group A state champion.

In Salem, Kevin Dalal defeated Robert Gibb 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) in a three-hour match at first singles to spark 1993 Group AA state champion Salem to a 6-3 victory over Blacksburg. It was the first time the teams had met since the Spartans won 5-4 in a state semifinal last year.
