FERRUM ADVANCES IN DIXIE

Freshman Jimmy Hamilton pitched a complete game as Ferrum defeated Methodist 8-5 in the second round of the double-elimination Dixie Conference tournament in Danville. Hamilton gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out 16.

Cal Scarce went 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run to lead the Panthers (22-3). Former Jefferson Forest star John Poindexter, Luther Headley and former Franklin County player Chad France each had an RBI triple.

Ferrum will face top-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan (29-1) at noon today.

In Blacksburg, Bo Durkac hit for the cycle, and Virginia Tech scored eight times in the first inning en route to a 15-4 rout of Louisville in Metro Conference baseball.

In addition to Durkac's solo home run, Denny Hedspeth, Justin Dobson and Bryan King hit two-run homers for the Hokies (17-17 overall, 4-5 in the Metro).

In Lynchburg, Denny Van Pelt set a school record with his 18th stolen base of the season, but Radford dropped a 16-13 decision to Liberty in the Big South Conference.

Brian Pardue went 2-for-5 and knocked in three runs for the Highlanders (18-15, 12-4). Jake Hines drove in four runs to spark the Flames (13-18-1, 4-12-0).
