FLOYD'S MARSHALL NO-HITS ROCKY GAP IN BASEBALL

In the Blue Ridge District opener for both teams, Salem defeated Alleghany 8-7 as the Spartans (4-1) rallied for six runs in the fifth inning.

Salem had fallen behind in the first inning, giving the Mounties five unearned runs. Greg Harrison, a freshman, relieved after one-third of an inning and went the rest of the way. He gave up only four hits.

Harrison also doubled in two runs to lead the sixth-inning rally. The Spartans had six hits in the inning.

Chris Crutchfield and Shawn Ward each had two hits for the Mounties.

In other baseball:

In Rocky Mount, David Webster (2-1) pitched a one-hitter as Franklin County beat Patrick Henry 10-0 in a Roanoke Valley District game shortened to five innings because of the "slaughter rule."

Riley Hodges went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Sheldon Bower was 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Eagles (6-2, 4-0). Ryan Johnston had the lone hit for PH (1-5, 1-3).

In Pulaski, Mike Souma went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and an RBI for William Fleming as the Colonels held off a rally to defeat Pulaski County 11-8 in a Roanoke Valley District matchup.

Pitcher Greg Dunkin threw a complete game, striking out four and walking one to lead the Colonels (2-8, 1-3).

Timmy Davis went 4-for-4 with three singles and a triple for Pulaski County (3-5, 1-3), and pitcher Jason Corbin went 3-for-4 with three triples, a double and three RBI.

C.D. Polumbo went 3-for-5 with five RBI, and Shannon Gray, Rich Ellis and John Bradberry each had two hits as William Byrd defeated visiting E.C. Glass 8-3 in a non-conference game. Mike McGuire (4-0) struck out eight in five innings as the Terriers (8-0) held the Hilltoppers to two hits.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Northside defeated visiting Rockbridge County 4-2 in a Blue Ridge District game. Ben Caldwell scored one goal and assisted on another for the Vikings (2-2, 2-0).

In Martinsville, North Cross avenged a loss by beating the Bulldogs 4-0 on goals by Mark Levane, Aaron Hodgin, John Prillaman and Ry Moore. Martinsville is 5-2.

O In Rocky Mount, Franklin County tied GW-Danville 3-3 in a non-district

game. Keith Mattson had two goals and an assist to lead Franklin County (2-2-2). Paul Lawrence scored two for GW (1-3-1).

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At River's Edge, unbeaten Patrick Henry won its fifth game by beting Magna Vista 4-0 in a non-district contest as Holly Spraker, Ayisha Whitenack, Sarah Mercer and Sarah Sharpley scored goals.

Visiting Roanoke Catholic beat William Byrd 3-0 on goals by Christy Hinman, Elaine Ronquillo and Meave O'Meara. Catholic is 1-3-1.

At Cave Spring Junior High School, Cave Spring edged Salem 2-1 on goals by Ann Schleupner and Shaleigh Wright. Salem's Heather Moore scored the opening goal. Wright's goal won the game 20 minutes into the second half. Cave Spring is 6-0.

\ SOFTBALL: In a Roanoke Valley District opener at the Sports Complex, Patrick Henry edged Cave Spring 9-8. In the bottom of fifth inning Kris Carter's two-out single drove in a run to tie the score. In the bottom of the sixth, the Patriots scored on a single, an error, a hit batsman and a bases-loaded walk to Jeannie Linkenhoker. The Patriots are 2-4 overall; the Knights are 4-3.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Kevin Dalal defeated Robert Gibb 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) in a three-hour match at first singles to spark 1993 Group AA state champion Salem to a 6-3 victory over visiting Blacksburg. It was the first time the teams had met since the Spartans won 5-4 in a state semifinal last year.
