BAIN, Merlie Phillips, 65, of Check, passed away Saturday, April 16, 1994 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her father, Edgar C. Phillips and a brother, Roy Phillips. Survivors include her husband, Floyd F. Bain Sr., Check; five sons, Floyd Bain Jr., Dale Bain, Joseph Bain, all of Check, Calvin Bain, David Bain, both of Radford; two daughters, Deborah Bowyer, Cathy Kozar, both of Christiansburg; mother Lessie Phillips, Pilot; one sister, Erma Allen, Pilot; two brothers, William Phillips, Richard Phillips, both of Salem; 17 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; two stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Kenneth Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in Indian Creek Cemetery. BLANKENSHIP, Edna Louise, 62, of Roanoke, died Thursday, April 14, 1994, in a Roanoke hospital. She is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Danny Michael and Eleanor Blankenship, Carry Eugene Blankenship, Garry Lee Blankenship; one sister, Georgia Gibson; four brothers, Wallace Barton, Raymond Barton, Ward Barton, Jimmy Barton; two grandchildren, Wendy Craft and Charlie Blankenship. BYRD, Essie Pinkard, (``Mama Essie''), 101, died Friday, April 15, 1994, at South Roanoke Nursing Home. Born July 31, 1892, in Ferrum to the late Charles Edmond Pinkard and Lula Starkey Pinkard. Mrs. Byrd was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Harden Byrd. Mrs. Byrd was a member of Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #11, Bassett. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Draper of Roanoke, Margaret Jarrett of Bassett; two sons, Lloyd Pinkard Byrd Sr. and Herman C. Byrd, both of Bassett; a sister, Gladys F. Pinkard of Bassett; a brother, Hendrix C. Pinkard of Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, at Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church with interment in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville. The Rev. Jim Meredith and Rev. Joseph B. CLARK, Mildred Taber, of Roanoke, passed on March 19, 1994. Born 1894, in Gettysburg, S.D., she was the daughter of Jessie Wright Kennedy and Clarence Wilbur Taber, author and prominent medical lexicographer. Mrs. Clark was a free-lance writer and dietitian, having received her early education in Evanston, Ill. and graduating from Battle Creek Sanitarium, Mich. She was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Roanoke. She was predeceased by her husband, Joe B. Clark, Oklahoma City, Okla. Survivors include a son, Joe B. Clarke, Jr., Lafayette, La. and a daughter, Shirley Clark Hoel, Roanoke; four grandchildren, Suzanne Clarke and David H. Clarke and Clark G. Love and Bruce D. Love and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m. at Oakey's South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to church.

COX, Samuel R., (``Gike''), 78, of Atkins, died Friday, April 15, 1994, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia. Mr. Cox was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Marion VFW Post #4667 and a retired businessman of the Atkins Community. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Calhoun Cox of Atkins; one daughter, Connie Cox Potter of Shawboro, N.C.; two sons, Sammy Cox and Willie Cox both of Atkins; three sisters, Ann Cox Jennings of Marion, Polly Cox Ernest and Eva ``Toots'' Cox Jarvis both of Sugar Grove; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 17, 1994, 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the R ev. Grady Byrd officiating. CRANEY, Mr. Clarence F. Sr., (``Turk""), 82, of Lexington, died Friday, April 15, 1994, in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center, Buena Vista. He was a son of the late Mrs. Nettie T. and Mr. Daniel Craney. Mr. Craney was preceded in death by his late wife, Mrs. Lillian H. Craney. He was a retired upholsterer, a veteran of World War II and a member of the Randolph Street United Methodist Church, serving in the Senior Choir and the Methodist Men. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #291. Surviving are two sons, Clarence F. Craney Jr. and Edward W. Craney Sr., both of Lexington; four daughters, Mrs. Constance C. Poindexter, Mrs. Nettie C. Carter and Mrs. Willa Mae C. Turner, all of Lexington, and Mrs. Elaine C. Franklin, Roanoke; 25 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward P. Craney, Lexington; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the residence of Mrs. Constance C. Poindexter, 205 Maury St., at any time. He was preceded in death by his parents, Montraville and Ossie Frances Ferguson, also a brother, Mason Ferguson. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Madeline E. Ferguson of Roanoke; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Steve Howell of Vinton, Frances and Giles Duncan of Salem; two sons and daughters-in-law, James C. and Jackie Ferguson of Roanoke, Glenn E. and Janet Ferguson of Oregon; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Ammon and Catherine Ferguson of Bedford; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Dorothy Teass, Louise Chandler, both of Bedford, Mary Ann and Glenn Conner of Calif.; also a number of nieces and nephews. FRALIN, Joseph Johnson, 79, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, April 15, 1994. He was retired from civil service and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Dora Morgan Fralin; one daughter and son-in-law, Rita J. and Allen L. Bennett, Roanoke; two sisters, Nellie Jenkins and Mildred Akers, both of Rocky Mount; two grandchildren, Mitch Bennett and Chad Bennett. GIBSON, Myrtle Dooley, 62, of Route 1, Montvale, died Friday, April 15, 1994, in a Roanoke hospital. She was born in Bedford County, May 31, 1931, a daughter of the late Spinner Dooley and Bessie Gray Dooley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Gibson Sr. and a daughter, Rae Lynn Gibson. She was a member of Montvale Presbyterian Church. She is survived by five sons, Charles W. Gibson Jr., Fincastle, Bobby C. Gibson, Tommy J. Gibson, and John E. Gibson, all of Montvale, Joe D. Gibson, Hardy; four daughters, Debbie G. Dooley and Donna G. Long, both of Montvale, Dorothy G. Hogan, Roanoke, Anne G. Pack, Hardy; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 9 stepgrandchildren and 7 stepgreat-grandchildren. NELSON, Lawrence Wayne, 50, of Pulaski, passed away Saturday, April 16, 1994, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. Born May 30, 1943 in Pulaski County, Va. he is the son of Leonard Wesley Nelson and Clara Lillian Mooney Nelson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Max Nelson. He was an employee of the Pulaski Furniture Corp. as an electrician. TAYLOR, Elzie Lue Allen, 67, of Denison, Texas, formerly of Madison Heights, passed away Monday, April 4, 1994, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Taylor. Elzie was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Nettie Howard Allen. She is survived by twin daughters, Linda Taylor and Frances Spencer of Denison; two sisters, Evelyn Salley of Chesapeake and Virginia Nolen of Blacksburg; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. WRIGHT, Clarence William, of Roanoke, died Saturday, April 16, 1994, in a local hospital. He was a decorated veteran of World War II. He was greatly loved by his family and will be sadly missed. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Virginia Wright; daughter, Cindy Lyn Schnieder; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald L. and Bonnie A. Wright, Barry W. and Margaret S. Wright; grandchildren, Shawn W. Hicks, Bryan W. Wright, Jennie Schnieder, Sheridan Wright, Sonnet Wright, ShaLeigh Wright, Shimila Wright, Kimberly Wright. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, 1994, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Maurita Wiggins officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 17, and Monday, April 18, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
