AGNEW WINS NRVS FEATURE

On the last lap, Jeff Agnew still had a little bit left.

That's how Agnew stayed a car-length in front of Tim McGuire and won the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car race Saturday night in the Kool 100 Radio 200 at New River Valley Speedway.

The two Chevrolet drivers battled for the lead after the last restart on lap 92. Agnew allowed McGuire to pull alongside, but did not let him make the pass.

It was the 14th career victory at the track for the Floyd driver.

"He [McGuire] was coming on real strong the last couple of laps," said Agnew, who won for the second time in three starts. "I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to keep him from passing me. But I stayed low and I stayed in front of him."

McGuire's effort on the last few laps almost earned the Roanoke racer a victory at New River for the first time since he won the track championship in 1988.

"Right there at the start, we knew we could hang on if we didn't abuse the car," McGuire said. "At the end, I didn't know who I would be racing for the win. But I knew I had enough of a car that was capable of winning. That's what I'm happy about, just being in that position."

Agnew took the lead on the restart on lap 58 when Mike Dillon did not get a good jump because his tires were cold.

"I got underneath Mike a little bit and he got a little loose," Angew said.

Dillon, who led the first 57 laps from the pole, slipped back to sixth place before his tires warmed again.

Ray Young of Bassett finished third in a Pontiac. Dillon, from Clemons, N.C., worked his Pontiac back to fourth.

Darrell Holman of Abingdon placed fifth in a Chevrolet. Salem's Tink Reedy was sixth in a Dodge.

The race was stopped for about half an hour to clear the track after Tony McGuire and Stacy Compton collided on the front stretch.

McGuire and Compton had been battling for second place for about 20 laps. Compton tried to make the pass coming out of turn 4 on lap 78. The cars touched and ended up against the wall.

Rock Harris took the lead on lap 10 and went on to drive his Pontiac to victory in the 35-lap Limited Sportsman race. It was the second consecutive victory for Harris, from Yadkinville, N.C.

Dean St. John finished second, Kenny Montgomery third, Bo Howell fourth and Holman fifth.

Mike "Monk" Marion of Radford took the lead on the start and recorded an easy five-second victory in the caution-free 25-lap Pure Stock race. Robbie Cundiff finished second and Ronnie Vaught third.

Charlie Smith of Dublin inherited the lead on lap 14 and went on to win the 25-lap Modified Mini Stock race. Jimmy Hinkley held off Dale Sutphin for second place.

Kevin Kenley of Radford held off Kevin Light and Terry Hanks to win his second Mini Stock race of the season. The race was extended to 27 laps because of a late-race caution.
