WHITE DOES IT ON MOUND, AT PLATE

Salem rode the arms and bats of Rhonda Rankin and Erica Lokey to the championship of the Optimist Club of Roanoke softball tournament at the Moyer Complex in Salem.

In the championship game, Salem beat Franklin County 12-0. Rankin was the winning pitcher and hit a home run. Lokey had three RBI for the Spartans (7-1).

In a semifinal, Salem beat James River 11-5 as Rankin went 4-for-4 and Lokey had six RBI. Rankin also notched the save in relief of Pam Glosser.

In the first round, Salem beat Greenbrier, W.Va., East 8-7. Rankin got the victory in relief of Lokey, who threw the first six innings. Rankin was 2-for-3, and Kim Farewell had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh.

In the third-place game, James River beat Patrick Henry 12-5.

Patrick Henry's Jamie Price won the 100 and 200 meters at the Volunteer Track and Field Classic in Knoxville, Tenn.

William Fleming's Dominick Milner placed first in the long jump with a leap of 23-3 and was sixth in the 400 (50.44). The Colonels' John St. Clair was third in the discus with a throw of 153-6.

Mary Jennings scored on an assist from Mary Logan, giving host North Cross (2-4-1) a 1-0 victory over Charlottesville in girls' soccer.

Eric Mull posted a shutout, but host North Cross (5-1-2) couldn't put the ball in the net in a scoreless tie with Tennessee High in boys' soccer.
