INSIDE THE HOTEL SO FAR

Contractors renovating Hotel Roanoke found four layers of flooring in some sections of the kitchen, testimony to the many facelifts given the century-old building. Yet not one column is out of plumb, said Carl Secrest, construction superintendent.

Secrest, who works for F.N. Thompson Co. of Charlotte, N.C., is on his second major project in Roanoke. He and senior project manager Bob Schneider built Dominion - now First Union - Tower, which they have a good view of from the $40 million hotel and conference center project.
