Andy Lambert picked up the win, permitting two hits and striking out nine in five innings.
The Cougars improved to 5-2-1 overall, 2-0 in the district.
In other baseball:
Keith Shupe (2-0) pitched a complete game and smashed a grand-slam home run and a single as Lord Botetourt defeated James River 8-0 in a non-district game in Daleville. Shupe struck out nine and gave up three hits. Teammate Jack Johnson also went 2-for-3 for the Cavaliers (5-1).
Keith Bryant (0-2) struck out 15 as he threw a complete game for the Knights (0-3).
An 11-run third inning keyed visiting Lynchburg Christian Academy's 17-2 rout over Roanoke Valley Christian in a Virginia Independent Conference game. Tim Tafford and Matt McGraw each went 3-for-4 for the Bulldogs (3-0 overall and district). Mike McGuire had two hits for the Eagles (1-4, 1-3).
\ SOFTBALL: Amy Layman pitched a two-hitter as Glenvar pounded visiting Craig County 25-2 in a Pioneer District game. Amanda Rydell led the Highlanders (4-5-1) at the plate with four hits, two doubles and four RBI. Craig County is 0-3.
April Updike's three-run double keyed a six-run first inning that sparked Roanoke Valley Christian to a 7-4 Blue Ridge Conference win over Timberlake Christian in Lynchburg. RVC improved to 4-0 in the league and overall.
\ BOYS' SOCCER: Ryan McDermott scored a pair of goals to lead Salem (3-2) to a 3-1 victory over Rockbridge County. Brennan Gilmore had the lone goal for the Wildcats.
Joe Cockfield scored two goals and Andy McCaskill added one as William Byrd shut out Northside 3-0 in a Blue Ridge District match. Chris Sowers had three assists for the Terriers (4-0 overall, 3-0 Blue Ridge). Northside is 2-3 and 2-1.
Shane Duddy had three goals to lead Roanoke Catholic (2-5) to a 4-2 victory over James River. Jason Hayslett and Michael Broughman had goals for the Knights (1-6).
\ TRACK AND FIELD: Tracie Matney scored firsts in the triple jump, long jump, discus and 200-meter dash, leading Carroll County past Graham 70-47 in a girls' non-district meet. Matney also anchored the Cavaliers' winning 400 relay team, making her responsible for 21 1/4 of Carroll's total points.
