ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The consumer price index, the nation's main measure of inflation, stood at 147.2 at the end of March, compared with 146.7 at the end of February and 143.6 a year ago. This means the same basket of goods and services that cost $143.60 last year cost $147.20 at the end of last month.

The inflation rate for the month was 0.3 percent, which translates into an annual inflation rate of 2.5 percent for the first quarter of this year.

Other indicators new to the chart this week show Norfolk Southern Corp. loaded 19,936 coal cars in its Pocahontas fields last week, a slight increase from 19,249 cars the week before and 19,482 a year ago.
