IT'S ALWAYS BASKETBALL SEASON SOMEWHERE

Basketball is most commonly associated with winter.

After all, the high school season ends in early March. The college campaign is over by the first weekend in April. And the regular season for the professionals is winding down.

But basketball is also a Summer Olympics sport. So it isn't out of season to be thinking about basketball. And there's still a lot of basketball to think about.

ROUNDBALL ROUNDUP: The playoffs got under way for the Christiansburg Men's Open Slowbreak League. And things went pretty much as expected.

The only first-round upset saw 12th place finisher Federal Mogul knock off No. 5 Woodmen of the World 52-46.

Regular season champ The Rebels won easily over Hubbell Lighting 109-39.

Ties were the order of the season in Pulaski boys basketball as both the Junior and Senior Leagues ended with two teams at the top.

In the Junior League, the Tar Heels and the Hornets tied at 10-2.

The Tar Heels forced the tie by winning their last nine games. Included in that stretch was a 62-56 victory over the Hornets that forced the tie at the top spot. ALAN JARRELLS led a balanced attack for the Tar Heels with 15 points. MIKE PARKS added 14 and ANDY BOND 12.

CHRIS DAVIS had a game-high 26 points for the Hornets while CHRIS PHILLIPS had 17.

Parks won the scoring title, averaging 23.6 points per game. Other top scorers were ERIC HARRIMAN of the Lightning at 18.1 ppg, JABBAR PATTERSON of the Wolverines at 17.8 ppg, Davis of the Hornets at 17.2 ppg, and EDDIE CARTER of the Wolverines at 15.8 ppg.

Patterson had the top single-game performance of the season with 35 points in the Wolverines' 65-64 win over the Lightning.

In the Senior League, the Suns and the Bulls shared the title with 7-3 records.

The two teams split a pair of late-season contests. In the season-finale, CHRIS GRAHAM (18), DREW MILLER (12) and BRETT CHRISLEY (10) combined for 40 points as the Bulls pulled into a tie with a 61-52 win.

Two days before, the Suns clinched their share of the tie by beating the Bulls 69-59. ROB BRANCH had 16 and ROBBIE CHINAULT 15 to pace the Suns.

JAMAR MCNAIR of the Blazers averaged an incredible 36.8 ppg to lead the league. Twice in the final week McNair topped the 40-point plateau, including 48 points in an 88-69 loss to the Suns.

Other top scorers in the league were A.J. STANCIL of the Celtics at 17.4 ppg, LARRY MARSHALL of the Celtics at 17.0 ppg, Chinault of the Suns at 14.7 ppg and DERRICK HUNTER of the Bulls at 14.0 ppg.
