NS finds partners for intermodal link
Norfolk Southern Corp. and two other railroads have formed a partnership for the use of intermodal railroad equipment.
NS, Union Pacific Railroad and Conrail will build a fleet of 3,000 containers, each 48 feet long, through a joint venture called EMP. Each railroad will provide 1,000 of the containers, which can be carried either on rail flatcars or flatbed highway trucks - thus the designation "intermodal."
EMP will be responsible for the distribution and movement of the equipment, which will be available to customers on a daily or lease basis.
The enterprise will offer the country's first interline equipment reservation system, which customers can access via a personal-computer link. It is scheduled to begin in September.
