U.S. SOCCER TEAM DEFEATS MOLDOVA 3-0

At Davidson, N.C., Claudio Reyna and Mike Lapper scored their first international goals as the United States (2-3-6) ended a nine-game winless streak with a 3-0 victory over Moldova in an exhibition soccer game. Frank Klopas scored his first international goal in 2 1/2 years in the third minute. Lapper made it 2-0 with five minutes left in the first half , and Reyna, the former Virginia Cavalier making his first start, scored midway through the second half. The Americans outshot Moldova 22-6. The Americans haven't had their top forwards and midfielders since last summer because of European club commitments. They won't return to the United States until next month, about four weeks before the Americans' World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 18. With 33 minutes left in the first half, U.S. goalkeeper Tony Meola made a big save on a breakaway by Sergey Kleschenko. The Americans play Iceland on Sunday at Chula Vista, Calif., a San Diego suburb.

In Las Vegas, Michael Moorer and heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield each weighed in at 214 pounds for their fight Friday night at Caesars Palace. Moorer has a 34-0 record with 30 knockouts; he is 12-0 with eight knockouts as a heavyweight. Oddsmakers give Moorer a good chance of becoming the first left-handed heavyweight champion in history. Holyfield is a 2-1 favorite. Holyfield, 31, whose only fight against a left-hander was eight years ago, regained the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association titles on points over Riddick Bowe on Nov. 6. His record is 30-1, with 22 knockouts.

Prize money for the U.S. Open tennis championships will be increased to a record $9,360,100 for 1994, said J. Howard "Bumpy" Frazer, president of the U.S. Tennis Association and chairman of the tournament. The singles titles for men and women will be worth $550,000, an increase of $15,000. The Open begins Aug. 29 and runs through Sept. 11.

Billy Packer stopped John Madden's nine-year winning streak Tuesday night when he was honored as outstanding analyst at the 1994 Sports Emmy Awards in New York. ESPN was the big winner with 10 awards, followed by NBC with six and CBS and HBO with five each.
