RIGGS LEADS SPARTANS

In Narrows, J.C. Riggs had two hits and scored three runs as Giles defeated Narrows 9-3 on Wednesday in a baseball game that did not count in the Mountain Empire District standings.

Left-hander Jason Dunn pitched a complete game for the Spartans (4-7), giving up four hits and striking out 11 in seven innings. Narrows is 6-2.

In other baseball Wednesday:

In Wytheville, Derek Englehard and Ryan Biddle each went 3-for-5 and Biddle drove in three runs to lead Radford past George Wythe 10-6 in non-district action. Matt Linkous (2-3) went the distance for the Bobcats (6-7). The Maroons are 4-5.

Kenny Ward hit a solo home run in the third inning, propelling Carroll County (7-3) to a 5-0 victory over Richlands (5-4) in a non-district game. Kevin Dalton gave up five hits and struck out eight en route to the victory. Ward was 2-for-2, and Brian Hawks went 3-for-3 with one RBI.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: In Moneta, Brookville scored three times in the first half and cruised to a 3-1 victory over Liberty in the Seminole District.

David Barker, Zack Lafratta and Tommy Doran had the goals for the Bees (6-1-1 overall and in the district). Lee Fisher scored in the second half for the Minutemen (3-3).

Michel Mourou scored two goals to lead William Fleming (7-1 overall, 2-1 district) to a 4-2 Roanoke Valley District victory over Pulaski County in Dublin.

\ SOFTBALL: In Bedford, Monica Byers had four hits and five RBI as Liberty (5-3, 5-3) blasted Altavista 27-1 in a Seminole District game. The Colonels are 2-6.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Blacksburg lost 6-3 earlier this week to 1993 Group AA champion Salem. On Wednesday, the Indians had their revenge, whipping the Spartans 8-1 in Blacksburg. The Indians (5-1) lost five of the six singles matches the first time the teams played, but reversed that in the rematch.

\ TRACK: In Galax, Monica Lucas won the long jump, triple jump, 100 meters, 200 meters and ran on the winning 400-meter relay team to lead Floyd County to the girls' title in a Mountain Empire District meet. The Floyd boys also won.

David Robinson won the shot put and high jump, Chad Pack won the 400 and 800 and freshman Tony Lewis won the 100 and 200 as host Glenvar (9-0) easily won a boys' meet with Bath County and Craig County.

In the girls' meet, Trish Nervo won the 1,600 and 3,200, Amanda Kennedy took the 100 and 200 and Mandi Bishop tied a school record with a victory in the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches).

Jamie Price won the 100 and 200 and ran on the winning 400 relay team, and Larry Jones won the long jump and 110 hurdles and was on the winning 400 relay team as host Patrick Henry beat Pulaski County and Franklin County in a boys' Roanoke Valley District triangular meet.

Sandy Hudson won the 100 and 300 hurdles to lead Franklin County past Patrick Henry and Pulaski County in the girls' meet. Patrick Henry's Arminta Crosby won four events - long jump, triple jump, 100 and 200 - and was on the winning 400 relay team.
